Weikersdorf am Steinfelde: Forest Trails, Wine and Architectural History
Accommodation in Weikersdorf am Steinfelde
Weikersdorf am Steinfelde combines a distinctive historic townscape with a variety of ways to spend time outdoors. When planning your trip, you can consider the different highlights separately: buildings and long-established features of the town, hiking and cycling routes, and the local wine and inn culture. This makes it easy to decide whether to focus your stay primarily on local history, outdoor activities or a culinary break.
Streetscape and Architectural History
Typical Zwerchhöfe, with their wide entrance gates, have been preserved along the main street and continue to shape the streetscape. The Steinfeldhof adds a historical dimension to the townscape: it is an estate belonging to Rein Abbey. Its present-day building is a late Gothic structure dating from the 16th century. The farm’s historical function and the architectural character of the present-day building are thus two distinct aspects of its history.
The parish church of St James the Elder offers another perspective on the area’s architectural history. Its three-bay nave was built in the Baroque style. The tower and high altar area, however, are thought to date from between 1150 and 1200. The different dates make the church especially interesting if you want to see how several building phases come together in one place of worship.
The Baroque Chapel of the Cross is also associated with a specific date: it was built in 1773 in accordance with the wishes of benefactor Simon Maiz and features a depiction of the Man of Sorrows. During renovation work initiated by construction committee chairman Robert Nemeth, a previously concealed fresco was discovered and uncovered. The chapel’s history thus includes not only its construction but also a later discovery made during its renovation.
The town’s character also includes the triangular village green, through which the Frauenbach stream flows and which remains undisturbed in Weikersdorf am Steinfelde. Unlike churches and farms, it is a landscape feature; it adds a preserved open space with a clearly named connection to the stream to the area’s architectural history.
Trails, Activities and Leisure
There are several well-marked forest hiking trails in Weikersdorf am Steinfelde. The Steinfeld running route leads through the pine forest. The wine hiking trail has a different point of interest: it follows a former Roman connecting road. This lets you choose between the forest setting of the hiking trails and the historical route of the wine hiking trail. Marked cycling routes are also available in Weikersdorf am Steinfelde.
Other leisure activities cater to different interests. The High Class Horse Center (HCHC), formerly the Weikersdorf riding stable, offers training facilities for riders. The skate park is open to young and old alike. The activities mentioned thus range from riding lessons to cycling, hiking and skating, while remaining distinct from one another.
Wine, Inns and Getting There
Weikersdorf am Steinfelde is considered the southernmost wine-growing municipality in Lower Austria. Traditional Heurigen wine taverns and inns invite you to stop for a meal. Wine is thus reflected both in the local designation and in the name of the wine hiking trail; Heurigen taverns and inns provide another option for a break during your stay.
Weikersdorf am Steinfelde is directly accessible by bus. Routes and timetables may change, so check your connection before travelling. This allows you to include getting there in your plans while keeping your choice of activities open: local history, forest trails, cycling and culinary stops each offer a different focus.
