Taugl
Accommodation in Taugl
For a trip to Taugl, hiking trails, scenery and cultural activities take centre stage. Options range from a circular route with chapels and hikes to alpine pastures to natural attractions such as the protected Seewaldsee. There are also places to visit in St. Koloman where you can learn about regional history and cuisine. When planning, it is worth choosing destinations according to the kind of outing you have in mind: an approximate walking time is given for some routes, while others stand out for their course or scenery.
Hiking Trails and Chapels
The Taugler dialect Stations of the Cross is a three-kilometre circular route with five chapels. A signposted hike leads to Wilhelmskapelle. The chapel lies at the foot of the Wilhelmswand, is one of Salzburg’s oldest sacred buildings and is considered a well-known place of spiritual energy. This lets you combine a route with religious significance with a view of an important building, although the two destinations do not have to be on the same route.
A children’s hike leads from the Grundbichlalm inn via Tauglboden to the Bergalm. The walking time is approximately one hour and depends on conditions and your personal pace. The TG21 St. Koloman: Bergalm Tour initially descends towards Tauglboden. From the Grundbichlalm, it follows a gravel forest road to the Bergalm. The descriptions therefore provide both a guide for planning your time and details about a tour’s route and terrain.
At the Trattberg, hiking options range from leisurely walks on alpine pastures to scenic circular tours across broad ridges. You can reach the alpine pasture area via the scenic, toll road, the Trattberg Panoramic Road. Check the toll conditions before driving and seasonal trail conditions before setting out on a hike. The Feuchter Keller show cave is near the car park at the end of the panoramic road. It is open to visitors seasonally; check in advance whether a visit is possible on your travel dates.
Moor Lake, Gorges and Waterfalls
Seewaldsee is a protected moor lake known for its diverse flora and fauna. On the right-hand side, a well-maintained forest road runs along the lake and is suitable for families with pushchairs and wheelchair users. This offers another way to experience the natural environment, different from hiking across alpine pastures or ridges.
In the Tauglboden area, the Tauglbach stream flows through gorges and past small waterfalls on its way into the valley. A hiking trail to the Strubklamm gorge offers a free glimpse of this natural spectacle. These destinations appeal to different interests: at Seewaldsee, the focus is on the moorland landscape and biodiversity, while gorges and waterfalls shape the character of the Tauglbach in Tauglboden. The Strubklamm can be viewed from a hiking trail; check trail conditions before setting out.
Culture and Regional Experiences
The St. Koloman Local History Museum offers insights into everyday life in the region through farming implements, school supplies, rocks and models. Admission is free; check before your visit whether this still applies. The Branterer Mill is used for demonstrations and is generally open to interested visitors. Confirm its availability in advance so you can take current access arrangements into account. The mill was probably built in the 18th century.
In the centre of St. Koloman, Tauglerei serves internationally inspired dishes made with regional ingredients. Check before your visit whether it is open on your chosen date. For direct purchases of locally produced goods, there is Taugler Körberl, a local group of sellers. Before arriving, find out which producers are taking part and how collection is organised. This lets you consider a museum visit, a meal out or shopping for regional products as separate parts of your trip planning.
