Schellgaden: A Destination, Its History, and a Cycling Tour

Three things stand out when planning a stay in Schellgaden: the route to Brugg Chapel, the history of gold mining, and cycling routes that pass through the area. Each offers a different point of reference for planning your trip: a named local destination, historical context, and information about route directions. If you are looking for a hotel in Schellgaden, you can plan your stay around these local features.

To Brugg Chapel

From the main road in the village of Schellgaden, a path crosses the Mur bridge and leads directly to Brugg Chapel after about 100 m. This gives a clear sequence of the starting point, the crossing over the Mur, and the destination. The distance is approximate and refers to the path beyond the bridge. Local trail conditions can change, so check them before your visit.

Gold Mining and the Powder Tower

Gold mining in Schellgaden is documented as far back as 1354; gold mining ceased in 1818. The gold mines were owned by the respective prince-archbishop. The dates span from the 14th century to the early 19th century and provide a timeframe; the ownership information adds another aspect of the mines.

The Powder Tower is a notable structure. A heritage inventory updated in 2021 lists it as the only still well-preserved building of Schellgaden’s former mining complex. It stands in the village of Schellgaden, in the forest, about 150 m west of Haus Schönberger. This relative location identifies the tower by reference to a named building. For Brugg Chapel, by contrast, the path across the Mur bridge is the key landmark: the two places can therefore be located in different ways.

Cycling Routes and Getting Your Bearings

The Speiche Muhr cycling route runs from St. Michael via Glashütte to Schellgaden; an older Lungau cycling guide describes this route. Here, the sequence of places is the main point of reference. The Mur Cycle Path is described using different route features: from Muhr to Schellgaden, it follows a small, almost traffic-free road and turns right at the edge of the village onto a well-paved agricultural track. It is well signposted at this point. Check the signs and conditions locally, as both can change.

The two route descriptions help with different planning questions. You can follow the Speiche Muhr using the places named; for the Mur Cycle Path, the type of road, turn-off, and surface provide additional navigational cues. The information about the chapel and the Powder Tower differs from the route details in the same way: it leads to individual destinations in the village, while the cycling route descriptions concern the course of a route.
