Discover Unternberg: History and Trails in the Murtal
Accommodation in Unternberg
Unternberg lies in the broad Murtal valley at an altitude of about 1,025 metres. The village combines cultural and historical themes with outdoor activities: Moosham Castle and the parish church of St. Ulrich offer distinct points of historical interest, while trails, cycling routes and the Mur Erlebnisreich add further attractions. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider whether your stay will focus more on historical sights, outdoor activities or seasonal offerings.
Moosham Castle and its history
Moosham Castle stands above Unternberg in the Murtal valley, on a rocky hill in the wooded Mitterberg. As Salzburg’s third-largest castle complex, it is a prominent landmark in the village’s history. Remains of a Roman settlement have been discovered at Moosham Castle; other sights include the Princely Rooms, where the archbishops stayed. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday. Castle visits are only possible as part of a guided tour for groups of at least two people. Check the dates before your visit.
Parish Church of St. Ulrich
The parish church of St. Ulrich also offers a distinct perspective on the village’s history. Its tower houses a bell dating from 1431. A Romanesque cross from the 12th century was installed in the church in 1984; it is on loan from the Prodingerbauer farm in Tamsweg. The cross’s date of origin and the date it was installed are therefore two different dates. The church site itself has a long history: a place of worship stood on the site of today’s church by the 15th century at the latest.
Summer, the Mur and protected landscapes
In summer, Unternberg’s Bauernherbst is part of the local cultural and traditional customs programme. The Mur Erlebnisreich on the River Mur is a place to relax and enjoy nature. In addition, the Mooshamer Moos in Unternberg is designated as a protected landscape area. Relaxation and enjoying nature are the focus at the Mur Erlebnisreich; for the Mooshamer Moos, the specific designation as a protected landscape area is the relevant point. These are two distinct nature-related themes: recreational activities and a protected landscape.
Exploring on foot, by bike and in winter
Options for active days include hiking trails, cycling routes, Nordic walking and mountain biking. The Himmelsteig (No. 88), which runs above Unternberg’s village centre, offers a distinct thematic element. Information boards there explain measures to restore the protective forest on Unternberg’s sunny side. The trail thus combines physical activity with a specific topic in landscape management. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
In winter, winter hiking trails and a cross-country ski trail along the Murtal valley are also available. The nearby Katschberg ski area is easy to reach from Unternberg by ski bus or car. As transport arrangements and seasonal offerings can change, check the connection that suits your travel date in advance. The seasonal highlights differ: Bauernherbst is part of the summer offering, while winter hiking and cross-country skiing are separate winter options.
