Zankwarn: Weather Cross, Farmstead and Eachtling Harvest
Accommodation in Zankwarn
Zankwarn is a district of Mariapfarr. The Weather Cross, the listed Zechner farmstead and a Troadkasten are local landmarks. At the Karlbauer farm, visitors can harvest ripe Lungau Eachtling potatoes directly from the field; several routes also pass through or lead to Zankwarn. These offer different starting points for planning your trip: local history, rural building culture, a seasonal field experience and routes with different itineraries.
Weather Cross: Location and History
The Zankwarn Weather Cross stands at the edge of the village, 200 metres from the turn-off to the children’s playground. Residents of the Zankwarn community erected the new Weather Cross on Good Friday 2021 and blessed it that day. The location and the event offer two different perspectives: the cross stands at the edge of the village, and its erection and blessing are dated to Good Friday 2021.
Farmstead and Further Local History
The 2025 heritage register lists the Zechner farmstead in Zankwarn as protected; it comprises two farm buildings and a farm chapel. The listing therefore refers to a complex with different types of buildings, not just a single building. A 2020 article by the Salzburger Nachrichten also locates a Troadkasten in Zankwarn, a district of Mariapfarr. Farm buildings are structures used for farm operations; a farm chapel is a religious building.
Seasonal Harvest at the Karlbauer Farm
At the Karlbauer farm in Zankwarn, visitors can harvest ripe Lungau Eachtling potatoes directly from the field. The experience is seasonal: if you want to include the harvest in your trip, plan your stay for when the potatoes are ripe. The ripening period, rather than just the desired location, is therefore key to your travel plans. The connection to the field distinguishes the harvest from merely naming a product; here, harvesting is the activity itself.
Routes to and Through Zankwarn
Nordic Walking Tour 2 takes the Winkelweg to Zankwarn and then returns to Mariapfarr; Tour 4 also reaches the village, crosses the bridge there and returns to Mariapfarr. The descriptions thus offer two specific distinguishing features while sharing the same return point in Mariapfarr: the Winkelweg on Tour 2 and the bridge crossing on Tour 4.
An older route description also passes through Zankwarn, crosses the road at a bridge and continues upstream through the Tiergraben into the Lignitz Valley. It describes a different continuation from the two Nordic Walking tours: the focus there is on the Tiergraben and Lignitz Valley, whereas Tours 2 and 4 are described as returning to Mariapfarr. Check local trail conditions for the older route; it is also advisable to check conditions before setting out on the Nordic Walking tours.
