From Seewiesen, there are striking views of the towering cliffs of the Hochschwab massif. The municipality also includes the Styrian Seeberg. For trip planning, the trails offer a range of destinations: they pass huts and follow historic routes as far as Eisenerz or Mariazell, and climb up the Hochschwab. St. Leonhard Church and a monument commemorating the ascent of the Hochschwab add to the history of the area.

Hiking from Seewiesen: routes and destinations

The 01-Nordalpenweg trail leads from Seewiesen via the VoisthalerhĂĽtte and SonnschienhĂĽtte to Eisenerz. Seewiesen is an eastern starting point for the ascent through the Dullwitz to the VoisthalerhĂĽtte. This ascent is used in both summer and winter; seasonal conditions can affect safety. Take them into account when planning your trip.

Another connection is stage 04 of the BergZeitReise to Mariazell. It leads from Seewiesen along the Mariazeller GrĂĽnderweg and follows historic paths along an old pilgrimage route. There is a large car park in Seewiesen or at Seeberg for this stage.

The ascent from Seewiesen to the 2,277 m-high Hochschwab is 12.3 km long, involves 1,410 metres of elevation gain and takes about 5½ hours. The alpine route is not recommended in bad weather. These tour details provide specific guidance on distance, elevation gain and time required, while the routes via the huts or to Mariazell have different destinations and itineraries.

Church and local history

St. Leonhard Church stands at the heart of the Seewiesen district and is known as the “Styrian Heiligenblut”. The subsidiary church of St. Leonhard has been mentioned since 1366. From 1754 to 1996, it was an independent parish. The Catholic parish church of St. Leonhard and its churchyard are protected by law as historic monuments.

A monument in Seewiesen commemorates Archduke Johann’s first ascent of the Hochschwab for tourism. It provides a distinct point of interest alongside the church: here, the focus is on the history of mountaineering, while the church provides a historical reference point within the district.

Landscape between Seeberg and Dullwitz

The landscape around Seewiesen was once shaped by a large lake. The village formed after the lake was drained. The Dullwitz high valley near Seewiesen is a remnant of glaciation during the last major ice age. Together with the views of the cliffs of the Hochschwab massif, the area offers both striking landforms and a clear story of how the settlement developed from a former lake to what it is today.

Getting to a hiking tour

The Aflenz–Bürgeralm–Seewiesen hiking tour can be reached by train to Bruck an der Mur, followed by RegioBus routes 170 and 171 to the Aflenz Kurort Kirche stop. RegioBus route 170 is available for the return journey from Seewiesen. Check the current timetable before travelling. This allows you to plan the train and bus journey there and the return trip as separate parts of your tour.
