Arnfels: Culture, Wine Country and Trails
Accommodation in Arnfels
Arnfels is located along the South Styrian Wine Road and combines cultural events with Baroque architectural history and trails through the countryside. Fixed event months and trails of varying lengths provide practical guidance for planning your trip.
Cultural Events and Architectural History
Cultural events vary by month: the Arnfels Castle Plays invite audiences to open-air performances every July, while the amateur artists’ market takes place in Arnfels every September. The Forum A cultural club regularly organizes concerts in Arnfels. If you want to plan your trip around a recurring event, July and September offer two different dates to choose from. Check the specific performance and market dates before making your plans.
The present-day parish church of “Maria Geburt” (Nativity of Mary) was built between 1714 and 1734 and is an important example of late Baroque architecture. The listed statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in Arnfels is a Baroque statue of a saint dating from the mid-18th century. The listed Johannesbrücke in Arnfels is also a road bridge featuring a wayside shrine with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The bridge’s function as a road crossing and its religious sculpture combine two distinct aspects of the monument.
Trails and Leisure
The circular “Arnfelser Wege – Remschnigg R1” trail is 8 kilometers long and takes about two hours. The “Weinwallfahrtsroute Arnfels” is 25 kilometers long and leads to Arnfels via Frauenberg and Eichberg-Trautenburg; it is therefore more than three times as long as the R1. Numerous hiking trails around Arnfels cross hills and pass corn and hop fields. Newly built cycle paths add to the leisure options.
Wine Country and Views
From the ridge south of Arnfels, on the border with Slovenia, the panoramic view stretches to the Bachern Mountains, past Speikkogel to Graz, and onward across wine country. From Arnfels Castle, enjoy a view over the entire market town and the surrounding natural landscape. The view over the town is distinct from the wider panorama extending as far as Graz and wine country. To the north of Arnfels, Eichberg is an attractive hiking destination, with well-tended vineyards and fine wines served at Buschenschank wine taverns.
Arnfels Outdoor Pool
The Arnfels outdoor pool has a swimming pool and a non-swimmer pool, with a total water surface area of more than 900 m². The area given refers to both pools combined. The pool also offers swimming lessons for beginners and children. If you are planning a visit or a lesson, check the season and current lesson dates in advance.
Visit the Museum
The “Zur Schnapshöhle - Bauern- & Traktormuseum” (Farm and Tractor Museum) displays historical equipment and tools from rural life in a lovingly renovated former farm building. The collection thus focuses on agricultural work and everyday history. At the “Schnapshöhle,” you can taste and buy fruit brandies made from natural ingredients. Museum visits are intended for groups of at least five people and require an appointment in advance. Check in advance whether an appointment is currently available.
