Vogau: Between the Circular Trail and Local History

Vogau offers two distinct starting points for planning your trip: the Meadow and Moor Circular Trail and the town’s historic traces. The trail passes through Vogau, Obervogau and Straß; Aupark Vogau provides access to it. This means a route through several towns and a named access point are available side by side. If you are looking for a hotel in Vogau, you can first consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on the trail or on the history-related sites. The route offers a way to explore several towns, while the archaeological finds and historical landmarks offer a different way to discover the region’s history.

The Circular Trail and Getting There

The Meadow and Moor Circular Trail passes through Vogau, Obervogau and Straß. Aupark Vogau provides access to the trail, so the park and the circular trail are separate points to consider when planning. From Graz, you can reach the trail via the A9 and then take the Vogau exit. This gives you a specific sequence of roads for travelling from that direction. You can take it into account when choosing your destination, while the trail itself remains a point of reference for planning your excursions.

Playground on Obere Dorfstraße

Vogau Playground is located at Obere Dorfstraße 6 and has classic play equipment and a drinking fountain. For travellers with children, it is a separate activity alongside the circular trail and local history. Its facilities therefore include both play equipment and a place to get drinking water. You can include the address and facilities together in your plans.

Roman Settlement and Villa

Vogau is documented as having been settled during Roman times from 16 BC to AD 476. Roman hamlets and a villa were discovered during excavation work in the municipality in 1877. The two dates serve different purposes: 16 BC to AD 476 marks the documented period of settlement, while 1877 is the year of the discoveries. The screed floor of the villa found in Vogau was paved with square and hexagonal tiles; there was a heating system beneath the floor. Two architectural features are thus found side by side: a geometrically patterned surface and heating installed beneath the floor. Alongside the long period of settlement, the finds therefore provide a specific architectural detail. For those interested in history, the architecture adds the question of how part of the Roman building was designed to the question of when Vogau was settled.

The History of the Mur and Its Visible Landmarks

Shipping on the Mur provides a regional historical backdrop: it played an important role from the 13th century until the first half of the 19th century. This is a much later period than the Roman settlement. At the Mur bridge near Ehrenhausen stand two of the four bridge saints of the municipality of Vogau: figures of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Nicholas, each about 2.5 metres tall. Their names and approximate height distinguish the two figures while also placing them within a group of four bridge saints. The plague cross at the intersection of Querstraße and Römerstraße is still preserved today and serves as a solemn reminder. The location details place each landmark at its own point: the bridge saints at the Mur bridge, and the plague cross at a road intersection.
