Accommodation in Schladming
Schladming brings together a range of themes: the history of skiing, trails through the landscape and buildings with historic character. When planning your trip, it may help to first consider which of these aspects interest you most. This can help you take into account event dates, seasonal cable car operating hours and route lengths to suit your plans. If you’re looking for a hotel in Schladming, the local details below can help guide your decision.
Skiing history and events on the Planai
The World Cup Trail follows the skiing history of the Planai ski area. It leads to starting points and key sections of the alpine ski races at the 2013 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. The route is therefore especially suited to visitors interested in the history of skiing: it connects several stops with the events of these championships, without requiring a visit to an event.
The Planai Stadium is also part of this sporting history. It was the finish stadium for the 1982 and 2013 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. The Nightrace, held annually under floodlights on the Planai in Schladming, continues this connection with skiing as an event. The 2027 edition is scheduled for January 26 and 27. If you’d like to plan your trip around the Nightrace, check the event dates for your planned stay.
Routes, circular trails and mountain bike trails
The Wilde Wasser themed trail is a 16.7-kilometre educational trail. It starts at the Kraiter-Wilde Wasser hiking portal in Schladming; its first section runs through the Talbachklamm gorge. The total length and starting point can help with planning, while the sections bring together different trail themes.
Another named route is the Talbachklamm Loop. At the beginning of the gorge, it includes a viewing platform above the Talbach stream. This is a distinct landscape feature along the loop and should not be confused with the route of the Wilde Wasser themed trail. If you’re interested in rivers and gorges, you can therefore consider the two trail descriptions separately.
The Planai Bikepark Schladming offers 42 kilometres of mountain bike trails. The trail offering may change; check it before planning your visit. Hopsiland Planai is the highest-altitude playground in Styria, located at over 1,800 metres above sea level. Two themed circular trails run there, with a total length of around four kilometres. Hopsiland is accessible by the 10-person Planai main cable car. Since it operates seasonally, check the operating hours before your visit.
Town museum, town gate and mining history
The Schladming Town Museum is housed in the Bruderladehaus. The museum building is a unique historic monument with a centuries-old character; inside the museum, a Bruderladenzimmer has also been preserved almost unchanged. These details offer two different ways to explore local history: the historic building itself and the preserved room as part of the interiors handed down over time.
Another historic building is the Salzburg Gate, the last surviving one of Schladming’s three former town gates. In the Obertal valley near Schladming, the Knappenweg and Schmelzofenrundweg trails follow historic mining paths. The Hopfriesen Nickel Museum presents the history of mining in a historic building. The trails and museum offer different insights into mining; Obertal should be understood as a distinct local area.
Getting around and practical planning
Schladming has a city bus. Check the current routes before travelling. From Schladming, the Planai-Hochwurzen Bahnen bus runs via Rohrmoos to the Hochwurzen Gipfelbahn. Since routes and travel times may change and no complete timetable is provided here, check the details before your journey. This lets you coordinate your bus trip with your planned destinations without assuming a particular frequency.
A cable car runs from Planet Planai up to the Planai. Check the current operating hours in advance. If you’re planning a stay that includes both the trails and the sites associated with skiing history, these transport details are particularly relevant alongside the time of year and any event dates.
