Sankt Blasen: Hiking, Cycling and Culture
Accommodation in Sankt Blasen
When choosing a hotel in Sankt Blasen, the activities you have planned can make all the difference. Hiking trails, cycling routes and a historic church each offer a different focus. There is also a forest pond nearby and seasonal tastings. During your stay, you can choose how to balance nature, activity and culture.
Hiking and trails around Sankt Blasen
Along the Lois Steiner Trail, there are views towards Kalkberg, Mühlsteinboden and Zirbitzkogel. Its final section leads through the forest to the reading garden by the church in Sankt Blasen. The “Ice Age – The Glacier in the Dead End” circular trail runs through the area between St. Blasen and the Thajagraben. It is accessible by public transport; if you would like to use this option, check the timetables separately.
The Mühlsteinboden Tour leads via Heiligenstadt to St. Blasen, then climbs along switchbacks to Mühlsteinboden. There, it reaches a small pilgrimage chapel where you can take a break. The “Around Roßeck” circular trail follows a different route, passing through the forest by the disused arsenic mine. The second stage of Via Natura also runs from St. Lambrecht to St. Blasen.
Cycling: Trail or cycle path
The MĂĽhlsteinboden singletrack ends in the village of St. Blasen, in the municipality of St. Lambrecht. It is considered technically challenging and is intended for advanced mountain bikers. The St. Blasen cycle path follows a different sequence of places: from St. Lambrecht, it leads via Heiligenstadt to St. Blasen, then returns to the starting point along the cycle path. When choosing your route, different features therefore take centre stage: the challenge for advanced riders on the singletrack, and the sequence of places and return to the starting point on the cycle path.
Church and local history
St. Blasius Church gives the reading garden trail a historical connection. It has been mentioned in documents since 1126; the present-day building was constructed between 1718 and 1721. The dates refer to two different milestones: 1126 marks the church’s first mention in documents, while 1718 to 1721 is when the present-day building was constructed. The Catholic branch church of St. Blasius and Hinterbach Cemetery in the cadastral area of St. Blasen are protected monuments.
Forest pond and seasonal tasting
The Podolerteich, a forest pond in Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park at an altitude of 1,050 metres, is located near Sankt Blasen. For a different experience, visit the Jausenstation StrauĂźenhof Wallner in Sankt Blasen, where ostrich-related products are available to taste. The venue is open seasonally. If you plan to go for a tasting, check in advance whether a visit is possible on your travel dates.
Stages and practical information
There is a public car park at Gasthof Kirchmoar for the third stage of Via Natura; the tour starts in Sankt Blasen. Keep the car park and tour starting point in mind as separate details when planning. As parking arrangements may change, check the situation before you travel.
