Scheifling: Traditions, Architectural History and Atelier Art
Accommodation in Scheifling
In Scheifling, possible travel interests range from traditions and architectural history to atelier art, wildlife watching and hiking. The following places and activities can help you plan your stay around the things you would like to do.
Traditions, Architectural History and Art
Scheifling’s Kirta festival takes place every year on the first Sunday in July. The festival traditionally features the tobacco smokers’ song, which begins, “Am Sunntag ist Scheiflinger Kirta, da kemman die Tabakracher zsamm” (“On Sunday it’s Scheifling’s Kirta, when the tobacco smokers get together”). If you plan your trip around this date, check the specific event details before setting off.
The local history museum is a small museum in the 400-year-old wooden house “Keuschn in der Gass’n.” Visits and guided tours there, as well as at the pipe museum, are possible only by telephone appointment. Call before your planned visit and confirm the appointment so you can take this requirement into account when planning.
The Roman Catholic parish church of Scheifling is dedicated to Saint Thomas. Its structure is essentially Romanesque and is partly surrounded by the wall of the former cemetery. Both the church and the former cemetery are listed as protected monuments. Here, you can explore the architectural history and protected status of both sites, bearing in mind that the cemetery is no longer in use.
The Hirt-Haus Atelier was founded in Scheifling in 1984 by sculptors Rudolf Hirt and Angelika Hirt-Thomsen. It exhibits works by regional and international artists. The parish church and the atelier represent different cultural interests: Romanesque architectural history and monument protection on the one hand, and exhibitions by artists from the region and around the world on the other.
Animals, Hiking and Cycling Route Connections
More than 40 different species and around 250 animals live at the Scheifling wildlife park and adventure farm, in the grounds surrounding the Prieler farm. On a walk, you can observe and photograph numerous wild, domestic and farm animal species at close range. The combination of walking, observing and photography makes the wildlife park a distinct outing alongside Scheifling’s cultural attractions.
At the Schrattenberg Pony Farm, children aged three and over can learn to ride. Lessons are given on ponies and small horses and are available by telephone appointment. If you plan a riding lesson, arrange a time in advance by phone. The specified minimum age and types of horses provide practical guidance if riding lessons are part of your trip.
For a hike, consider the “W75: Via Steinschloss” route. It ends at Scheifling railway station and is open for hiking all year round. This gives you two specific details to plan around: the route’s endpoint and its year-round accessibility. This offers a different timeframe from the Kirta festival, which takes place on a set Sunday each July.
The outdoor swimming pool also connects to the cycling route and railway: its pond is right beside the Murradweg cycling path, and a Murtalbahn railway stop is two minutes from the pool. These are two local reference points, not a single combined route. When choosing the focus of your stay, you can compare whether you would rather plan a hiking route, a visit connected to the cycling path, wildlife watching or time at Scheifling’s cultural sites.
Check the specific event date and arrange the visits mentioned in advance. This will help you take the different timing requirements of your planned activities into account.
