Discover Obergurgl
Accommodation in Obergurgl
When choosing a hotel in Obergurgl, the time of year is a useful place to start: the ski season in the Gurgl ski area runs from November to April, while the winter hiking trail and ice rink are subject to seasonal conditions. The Swiss pine forest, Hohe Mut Alm and St. John of Nepomuk Parish Church offer further, distinct highlights. Consider whether the ski area, nature trails or culture will be the deciding factor for your stay.
Swiss pine forest and trails
The Swiss pine forest south of Obergurgl is a protected natural monument in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve “Gurgler Kamm”; its trees are up to 400 years old. Along the Obergurgl Swiss Pine Forest nature trail, trees up to 300 years old line the path. Information boards and interactive stations introduce the Swiss pine as the “queen of the tree line.” The nature trail thus combines the world of trees with interpretation focused specifically on nature topics.
The Obergurgl winter hiking trail No. 3 leads to Obergurgl and continues to the Zirben Alm at the foot of the natural monument. In sections, it runs along both banks of the Gurgler Ache. The route therefore identifies both a destination and its connection to the stream. As it is seasonal and conditions can change, check the route status and conditions before your trip.
The GPS-guided Beilstein–Küppele Alm–Sohm Archaeological Circular Trail also leads to nine waypoints. If you include different trails in your plans, it offers a different thematic focus from the Swiss pine forest nature trail: here, archaeology takes centre stage. Trail conditions and interpretation infrastructure can change, so check the conditions for the route before visiting.
Hohe Mut and ski season
The Hohe Mut cable car operates as an 8-person gondola in two sections, running from the valley station in Obergurgl directly to Hohe Mut Alm at an altitude of 2,670 metres. At the Alm, it provides access to numerous hiking opportunities. The Hohe Mut Alm Nature Park information point covers glaciers, climate and high-alpine research. You can therefore consider a cable-car ride, hiking opportunities and nature-related topics as different aspects of your plans. The cable car’s operating information and timetable are seasonal; check them for your intended travel period.
The Gurgl ski area’s ski season runs from November to April. The season begins as early as mid-November, and conditions continue through the end of April. The slopes of Obergurgl and Hochgurgl are linked by the Top-Express connecting lift. If skiing is important to your trip, check the specific opening and closing dates for your travel days rather than relying on the season dates alone.
Culture and ice rink
St. John of Nepomuk Parish Church was dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk in 1737. Its ceiling paintings were created by Rudolf Margreiter in 1930. The dedication and paintings point to different periods in the church’s history and offer two specific reference points for exploring Obergurgl’s culture.
The Obergurgl ice rink covers 1,000 m². Skates and equipment can be rented on site seasonally. If you plan this activity, confirm that rentals are available before your trip. Together with the seasonal conditions on the trails, this is another reason to consider your planned travel dates when choosing your stay.
