Tarrenz: Brewing History, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Tarrenz
Tarrenz brings together very different reasons to visit: at Starkenberg Castle, a tour of historic rooms meets a brewery that is still brewing today. Hiking and cycling trails lead through the surrounding area of the Gurgltal Valley, alongside insights into rural life and crafts, as well as the Fasnacht tradition. When choosing a hotel, it may therefore be important whether you want to focus on culture, a particular route or a seasonal activity. The differences below can help you plan your stay around your own interests.
Starkenberg Castle: Brewery and Tour
The Starkenberger BierMythos features a 700-metre tour through 18 rooms of the castle. The Starkenberg Castle Brewery has been based in Tarrenz since 1810 and still brews beer in the historic rooms of the more than 700-year-old castle. This brings a tour of the castle rooms and the brewing tradition together at the same historic site; the castle is much older than the brewery. This combination makes for a clear focus when planning your trip if you are interested in both the tour and the brewery.
Local History Museum and Historical Techniques
The Tarrenz local history museum is housed in a farmhouse built in 1734 and offers insights into rural life and crafts in the Gurgltal Valley. The original rooms that have been preserved include a smoke kitchen, living room and bedroom. These rooms make everyday life tangible. At the Knappendorf, techniques from the Middle Ages are shown alongside those from the Early Modern period. The focus of each site is distinct: the local history museum looks at rural life and crafts in the valley, while the Knappendorf contrasts techniques from two historical periods.
The “Gemeindeamt Tarrenz” bus stop is a 15-minute walk from the Knappenwelt. This walk can help you plan a visit to the Knappenwelt.
Hikes with Different Route Types
The valley hike through the Gurgltal Valley covers 17 kilometres from Tarrenz to Nassereith, passing through forests and meadows and, in places, following the old Roman road Via Claudia Augusta. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change. By contrast, Trixi's Hexenlehrpfad is a 2.70-kilometre circular hiking and themed trail, with 16 riddles hidden in the Salvesenschlucht gorge. The two routes differ in distance and format: the valley hike goes from one place to another, while the Hexenlehrpfad is a loop with riddles as an additional theme. When choosing, you can weigh up the route length, the point-to-point hike or the riddle theme.
Cycling Route and Kneipp Facility
The Gurgltal cycling route passes through Strad, a district of Tarrenz. The Frauenbrunnen Kneipp facility is fed by radon-rich water, which supplies its fountain and pools. This offers two different points of interest for your stay: a specific route option and a distinctive description of the water.
Winter Activity and Fasnacht
Ice climbing is also possible in the Salvesenklamm gorge in winter. The activity depends on seasonal conditions, and safety requirements also apply. Check conditions before making plans.
Tarrenz Fasnacht includes the traditional rivalry between Roller and Scheller; witches also play a prominent role. Dates vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around Fasnacht, check the dates for the relevant year.
