Obsteig: Hiking among larch meadows and mountain views
Accommodation in Obsteig
You can plan your trip to Obsteig around clearly defined landscapes, trails and seasonal activities. Rather than grouping all the destinations under a single excursion theme, you can choose based on what you would like to do: hike along the Sturlbach stream, enjoy views from various vantage points or explore winter sports options. The destinations below are linked to specific places and routes, so you can decide which landscape or activity theme suits your stay.
Larch meadows, waterfalls and Burg Klamm
The Mieminger Plateau landscape conservation area is characterised by larch meadows with scattered woodland in a traditionally farmed setting. Meadows, trees growing at intervals and agricultural land use are therefore not merely the backdrop for individual excursion destinations, but are themselves part of the landscape.
Burg Klamm dates back to the 12th century and was restored in 1957. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The Sonnenplateau circular hiking trail reaches Obsteig, passes through the Lärchenwiesen landscape conservation area and follows the Sturlbach stream towards Burg Klamm. At Schloss Klamm, the Sturlbach forms a 60-metre-high waterfall; near the castle, the trail passes a waterfall. This route thus combines the landscape with a striking natural and historic site, without including a tour of the castle interior.
Compare hiking trails and viewpoints
The Grünberg–Simmeringalm route follows the Harnersteig trail to the Simmeringalm and offers views of the Inn Valley and the Stubai Alps. One variant leads to the “Auf dem Horn” viewing platform, which offers views of the Mieming Range, the Stubai Alps and the Mieminger Plateau. While the main route offers views of the Inn Valley and the Stubai Alps, the variant to the “Auf dem Horn” platform offers views of the Mieming Range, the Stubai Alps and the Mieminger Plateau. Another viewing platform at Lacke offers sweeping views of the Inn Valley and the Mieminger Plateau.
Travel information is also available for the Grünberg–Simmeringalm route: you can reach it by taking bus 350 or 355 to the “Obsteig Mooswaldsiedlung” stop. From there, it is about a 20-minute walk to the Grünberglift car park. Allow time for this walk and check the bus timetable before travelling, as public transport connections may change.
Winter routes and seasonal activities
The Grünberg children's area in Obsteig is a seasonal offering. The Grünberg lifts, including a drag lift, serve easy to intermediate slopes suitable for children. Another type of winter route is the Obsteig–Arzkasten No. 3 classic cross-country ski trail: it is around 13 kilometres long and starts at the Obsteig municipal office. The slopes are easy to intermediate and suitable for children, while the trail is around 13 kilometres long and starts at the Obsteig municipal office.
The snowshoe hike to the Lehnberghaus starts at the Arzkasten car park and leads to the hut. The Lehnberg toboggan run is 3.5 kilometres long and follows the same route from the Lehnberghaus back down into the valley. You can rent sledges at the Lehnberghaus for the descent. Check in advance whether rentals are available on your chosen date, as current operating conditions may vary. This lets you consider the snowshoe route to the hut and the toboggan run that follows as separate winter activities.
