Discover Sautens: Cultural History and Outdoor Experiences
Accommodation in Sautens
When planning a trip to Sautens, cultural history and outdoor activities can offer different focal points. Topics include religious heritage, the Kalkofen Adventure Site and a swimming pool built in the 1970s, as well as a viewpoint, an outdoor course and a toboggan run. When looking for hotels, it helps to start by asking what kind of trip you prefer: Would you mainly like to explore local history, plan a route with a named viewpoint, or include a winter activity? The following places and features offer specific starting points.
Cultural History and Local Heritage
The first Oswald Church in Sautens dates back to 1517. Several historians described the Sautens parish church as one of the most beautiful village churches in Tyrol. These references combine a precise construction date with a historical tribute—two different ways of approaching the church’s history.
The Kalkofen Adventure Site was created in 2004 through the cooperation of the mountain rescue service, fire department, municipality of Sautens and many volunteers. Its origins are also a story of working together.
In an account published in January 2023, the Ötztal Museums described the Sautens swimming pool and leisure centre as one of the few authentically preserved swimming pool buildings in Austria from the 1970s.
Matthias Bernhard Braun was born in Sautens in 1684 and became one of the most important Baroque sculptors of his time in Prague. His biography thus connects Sautens as his birthplace with his later significance in Prague.
The dates mark different milestones: 1517 is the year of the first Oswald Church in Sautens, 1684 Braun’s year of birth, the 1970s the period when the swimming pool was built, and 2004 the year the Kalkofen Adventure Site was created. This makes it possible to distinguish the construction, biographical and site histories chronologically.
Activities and Routes
The Ötztal Outdoor Course in Sautens combines a high ropes course with a forest ropes course and crosses the Ötztaler Ache via several zip lines up to 200 metres long.
The Rammelstein climbing garden was completely renovated in 2007.
The Zauberwald Sautens route leads to the “3-Kirchen-Blick” platform, where you can see the churches of Sautens, Oetz and Oetzerau. A little farther along the route, there is a forest playground. The trail thus combines a named viewpoint with another destination along the way.
The Sautens toboggan run is 1.5 kilometres long; winter operating conditions may vary. Check the latest operating information before travelling in winter.
The leisure activities mainly differ in format: the course combines several types of ropes course with zip lines, the Zauberwald is a route with a viewpoint, and the toboggan run is a winter activity. This lets you choose between climbing, a scenic walk and winter tobogganing.
