Obergurgl lies at an altitude of 1,930 m in the Gurgler Valley and is surrounded by alpine landscapes. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in the mountains, you can get a sense of the destination from its natural surroundings, trails and range of seasonal activities. These include a protected Swiss stone pine forest, routes for hikers and mountain bikers, and views into the world of glaciers. Which experiences suit your trip also depends on whether you’re more interested in short walks, a longer bike ride or the alpine summer.

Swiss Stone Pine Forest and Glacier History

The Swiss stone pine forest lies south of Obergurgl and has been a protected natural monument in the “Gurgler Kamm” UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1963. The trees are up to 400 years old. A dedicated themed trail, with 15 information boards and interactive stations, explores the world of the “queen of the tree line.” The walk combines time outdoors with information about the Swiss stone pine and this unique forest habitat.

The glacier landscape also tells the story of the region. The Piccard Bridge crosses the remains of the Gurgler Ferner glacier tongue. A monument in Obergurgl commemorates Auguste Piccard’s balloon landing on the Gurgler Ferner: on May 27, 1931, he set a new altitude record. The bridge and monument offer different perspectives—one on the visible landscape, the other on an event in the early history of high-altitude flight.

Trails and Activities in the Alpine Summer

Two mountain bike routes, with different distances and elevation gains, are the main options. The route to Langtalereck Hut starts in Obergurgl, is 13.66 km long and has an elevation gain of 560 m. It leads deep into the Ă–tztal glacier world. The Gurgler Ache Trail is shorter, at 7.65 km with an elevation gain of 130 m. It starts near the settlement of Pill, follows meadow and gravel paths uphill along the Gurgler Ache and ends in Obergurgl. The route is considered family-friendly. Trail surfaces and conditions can vary seasonally.

The “Forest Bathing on the Ochsenkopf” discovery trail offers a different way to experience the forest. Its 12 stations feature breathing exercises and meditations delivered through a web app. The trail starts and ends in Obergurgl and passes over the Ochsenkopf and through Poschach. The forest experience also includes a treehouse and platforms among the trees where you can stop and linger.

In summer, visitors to the Obergurgl-Hochgurgl area enjoy glacier tours to the Rotmoosjoch. Trail conditions and the availability of guided tours vary by season. The Obergurgl Alpine Centre offers a glimpse into the Ötztal alpine summer. From the valley station, take the 8-person Hohe Mut cable car in two sections directly to the Hohe Mut Alm at 2,670 m. The service is seasonal, so check the timetable before your trip. From the alm, enjoy views of the Ötztal glaciers and a total of 21 peaks over 3,000 m. The “Glaciers – Climate – High Alpine Research” information point explores the geology and changes in the mountain landscape. Visibility depends on the weather.

Family Activities and Seasonal Information

Obergurgl has two children’s playgrounds with different facilities. Zirben Alm playground is at the entrance to the Swiss stone pine forest and has a slide, a swing and climbing equipment. Kressbrunnen playground, near the tennis courts, has a slide, a sandbox, rocking equipment and two large trampolines. Both facilities are seasonal; check their availability before visiting.

The “Zirbenwald” via ferrata is considered suitable for families and is located 150 m from Davidshütte, at the start of the Swiss stone pine forest. Check local safety information before climbing. Free parking is available at the Festkogelbahn car park; from there, follow the Zirbenwald hiking trail and pass Davidshütte to reach the start of the via ferrata. Check parking availability on site before planning your drive.

Season is also an important factor in winter: Obergurgl is presented as a snow-sure winter sports destination, although snow and operating conditions vary by season. International specialties and Alpine cuisine are among the dining options; individual establishments and menus may change.
