Wald brings together several distinct reasons to visit: the history of St. Thomas Church, the Walder carnival and natural attractions such as earth pyramids, wildlife and scenic views. Its highlights range from architectural and local history to a recurring tradition, geology and wildlife. When choosing a destination, you can consider which of these topics interests you most.

Church History and the Walder Carnival

The Expositur Church of St. Thomas in Arzl Wald is located in Wald. A chapel dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle was built there in 1493. Following another fire in 1909, master builder Hörmann from Mötz gave Wald’s branch church its present appearance. The dates therefore mark different stages: the chapel was built first, followed later by the shaping of the church’s present appearance. For travelers interested in church history, this chronology offers a concrete connection to the building’s development.

Another cultural highlight is the Walder carnival. It takes place every four years in the hamlet of Wald. After the midday bells ring, more than 200 men and young men put on their masks and parade through the village. The event combines a specific time of day with a procession and the participants’ masks. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the date of the event and take its four-year cycle into account when making your plans.

Nature, Wildlife and Views

The earth pyramids are a natural landmark formed by centuries of erosion. The Earth Pyramids circular trail also includes a short detour to a waterfall. The trail therefore features both this geological landmark, formed over a long period, and a waterfall. The Wildlife Adventure Trail offers a different focus, providing an engaging introduction to the lives of the region’s wild animals. The trail is in Arzl/Wald, near the “Waldeck” snack station.

The “Innblick” viewing platform offers a view of the Inn Valley. Another way to experience nature and the landscape is the “Arzl – Benni-Raich Bridge – Wald” route. It runs from Arzl towards Wald as far as the “Pitzenebene” settlement, where you can admire the suspension bridge, which spans 137.7 meters. The two routes have different stated highlights: the Earth Pyramids circular trail includes a short detour to a waterfall, while the suspension bridge is a notable landmark along the route via Pitzenebene.

Getting There and Planning

Route “Wald 3” can be reached by bus to the Wald Feuerwehr stop. If you plan to use this connection, check the timetable for your travel date.
