Unterwindau: Hiking, Canyoning and Snowshoeing
Accommodation in Unterwindau
Unterwindau in Westendorf offers specific options for an outdoor-focused stay: canyoning, hikes and cycling tours are linked to named trails and places. In winter, the Straubing snowshoe hike and a cleared section along the Windauer Ache are also available. If you are looking for a hotel, these activities can help you decide what you would like your trip to focus on.
Canyoning with different tour profiles
The family canyoning tour leads through an open gorge along a stream. Watercourses, walking and sliding sections, small pools and natural obstacles shape the tour. It takes place at Unterwindau 36 in Westendorf. Check seasonal availability before your trip.
Kids’ canyoning is for children aged 8 to 12. At the end of the tour is a 14-metre-high waterfall: those who are feeling brave can rappel down it; alternatively, they can go around it. There is also a half-day canyoning tour for adults for participants aged 12 and over. It leads through gorges and includes rappelling and jumps. The age ranges overlap at 12. The meeting point for the half-day tour is the Canyoning Camp at the Getznerhof, Unterwindau 36, 6361 Westendorf.
Hikes along the stream and uphill
The Straubing circular hike starts in the Unterwindau district of Westendorf, near the Lendwirt, and initially follows the Windauer Ache towards the Gasthaus Jägerhäusl. The hike to the Kienzlinger Alm starts at the Gasthof Lendwirt in the municipality of Westendorf. It crosses the stream and climbs past farms towards Schwaigerberg. The sections described therefore differ considerably: the Straubing route begins along the water, while the Kienzlinger hike heads uphill towards the farms after crossing the stream.
Snowshoeing in the Windau Valley
The Straubing snowshoe hike crosses the winter landscape of the Windau Valley to the farm buildings at Straubing. The section along the Windauer Ache is a cleared winter walking trail. Travelling to Unterwindau by car is recommended. There are several parking options between the Lendwirt and the sawmill. Check parking and access conditions locally, as they can change.
Cycling routes and alternatives
In Unterwindau, MTB Route 207 leads to the Haslau power station and follows the Windauer Ache, passing the Gasthof Lendwirt and continuing to the Käsealm Straubing. At the Lendwirt, the Brixental cycle path offers a shorter, steeper route option or a longer one. South of Hopfgarten, this cycle path branches off towards Unterwindau.
