Discover Waidring: Bell-Ringing History and Steinplatte
Accommodation in Waidring
Waidring brings together several themes: the history of the parish church, the local bell-founding craft and winter activities on Steinplatte. Viewpoints and a tour to Reit im Winkl complete the picture.
Parish Church and Local History
The present-day parish church in Waidring was built in 1757 by Kassian Singer and Andrä Hueber. The Bishop of Chiemsee consecrated it on 15 August 1764. Most of the frescoes in the Late Baroque church interior were created in 1761 by Johann Perwanger and Matthias Mader. The construction, painting and consecration therefore mark different stages in the church’s history.
The cemetery completely surrounds the parish church. Traditionally, it contains only wrought-iron crosses.
The History of Bells Along the Experience Trail
The “Glockenwelt” exhibition is housed in the BIATRON at the Waidring/Steinplatte cable car parking area and serves as the starting point for the Bell Experience Trail. The approximately one-hour tour ends in Waidring’s historic town centre.
The stops explain the history of bell founding, the special features of Waidring’s bell foundries and local anecdotes. The trail thus connects the history of a craft with stories from the village. The historic bell founder’s house on the Bell Experience Trail is also associated with the casting of the first Lugmair bell—a specific link between the building and the local history of bell founding.
Steinplatte: Winter Activities and Access
The Steinplatte Waidring ski area offers mostly easy runs, a dinosaur run and Triassic Park. Steinplatte is particularly suitable for families with children. Triassic Park is located on Steinplatte in Waidring in the Pillersee Valley. You can easily reach Triassic Park from Waidring by gondola; there is no need for a long hike. If travelling by gondola is important for your visit, check in advance whether it is operating, as access information may change depending on operations.
Winter activities include the dinosaur-themed Triassic Funline, a free winter playground at Triassic Park and childcare that can be booked flexibly. There is also a winter hiking trail with a dripstone cave and viewing platform, as well as “Triassic Kinderland” in the Hausberg Arena in Waidring’s town centre. This is an area exclusively for beginners, with a wave track and practice lifts. Some activities may vary by season, so check which services are available during your travel dates before your trip.
Views and Other Tours
The viewing platform on the Triassic Trail offers views of the surrounding mountains of Steinplatte and the Pillersee Valley. The panoramic platform on Steinplatte is shaped like a fan coral and offers spectacular views down into the depths and far into the distance.
The Waidring–Reit im Winkl borderland tour is 47 kilometres long and runs along asphalt, gravel and forest roads. As route conditions can change, it is advisable to check the trail conditions before setting out. Allow about one hour for the Bell Experience Trail; the borderland tour covers 47 kilometres.
