Brandenberg can be discovered from many different angles: the gorges of the Brandenberger Ache, trails across the high plateau and a speciality passed down through generations. If you are considering Brandenberg as a destination for a hotel trip, these themes can help you choose the focus of your stay. The river landscape, the history of timber rafting, winter trails and regional food culture each offer a distinct perspective on the area.

The Brandenberger Ache and its natural environment

The Brandenberger Ache is a 22-kilometre-long left-bank tributary of the Inn and flows through the valley like a mighty canyon. Its gorges provide valuable habitats for numerous animal and plant species. In 1988, the Ache was declared a natural monument. This means that the river landscape combines a clearly defined protection status with ecological significance: the river shapes the valley, while the gorges provide habitats for many species.

The diversity of butterflies gives the natural environment another distinctive dimension. A 2016 study by the Austrian Federal Forests recorded 800 butterfly species in the Brandenberg Valley. Some of these species were found in Austria or Tyrol for the first time. This diversity adds a concrete natural history perspective to the picture of Brandenberg as a landscape destination. If you are interested in river landscapes and biodiversity, the canyon, gorges and butterflies are all part of the same regional setting.

Gorges, timber rafting and different trail details

The Kaiser Gorge connects the rocky landscape with the history of timber rafting. The paths, which can still be walked today, were cut specifically into the rock. Until 1966, logs were floated downstream on the waters of the Ache. The paths are therefore linked to an earlier use of the river. From the Kaiser Gorge car park, a forest track about 300 metres long leads to the gorge entrance.

The Tiefenbach Gorge is described using a different kind of information: after about four kilometres, the valley opens up, and walking through the gorge from start to finish takes around 1.5 hours. The details for the two gorges can therefore be read in relation to different planning questions: for the Kaiser Gorge, they describe the route from the car park to the entrance; for the Tiefenbach Gorge, they give an approximate walking time for the route through the gorge. This helps you distinguish a short access section from a time estimate for a gorge hike.

Winter trails and a circular route

In winter, the cross-country ski trails in Brandenberg start next to the church. They are connected and lead across the open fields of the Brandenberg high plateau to various parts of the village. The Brandenberg village walking trail also starts next to the church, at the entrance to the ski trail, but follows the signposted winter walking route. This distinction is useful when choosing your outings: the ski trails are described as a connected network, while the village walking trail is a separate signposted winter route.

The Brandenberg Butterfly Circular Route is also designated as an easy circular route. This rating offers a practical guide when comparing routes by their stated difficulty. Together with the winter walking route and cross-country ski trails, it gives you a picture of different types of trails rather than a single route intended to cover every interest.

Brandenberg Prügeltorte

Brandenberg’s local food culture includes Prügeltorte, which has been prepared over an open wood fire for generations. Its preparation method and its transmission from one generation to the next are the distinctive features of this tradition. It adds another dimension to a stay alongside the river landscape and trails: Brandenberg can be discovered not only through its gorges and high plateau, but also through a named local speciality. If you take both nature and regional food culture into account when choosing a destination, Prügeltorte adds to your impression of the area.
