Oberau Wildschönau: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Oberau Wildschönau
Wildschönau is a high valley in the Kitzbühel Alps, shaped by mountains and forests and free from through traffic. When planning a trip to Oberau Wildschönau, options range from hiking trails and seasonal mountain lift rides to family activities and local history. Kundler Klamm offers a hiking route framed by towering rock walls, while the museum and Krautinger schnapps tell the story of the region’s farming culture.
Hiking, the Gorge and the Landscape
The approximately 3.5-kilometre hiking route through Kundler Klamm starts in the district of Mühltal and is also suitable for strollers. Steep rock walls frame the gorge and rise up to 200 metres high. The tourist train runs between Mühltal and the entrance to the gorge from the end of May to the beginning of October; seasonal operating dates may change. Check the latest timetable before your trip.
For winter walks and hikes, there are trails on Schönangeralm, through the village of Thierbach and to the wildlife enclosure in Foisching. The Holzweg in Wildschönau is a family-friendly discovery trail with stations about nature, wood and life in the valley in the past. Geologically, Kragenjoch stands out as the only limestone mountain in Wildschönau; the surrounding mountains are made of slate.
Mountain Lifts and Seasonal Activities
The Markbachjochbahn is an eight-person gondola lift that takes you to the Markbachjoch hiking area. Its operating dates and times depend on the season. The Schatzbergbahn also runs directly from the centre of Auffach to Schatzberg, providing access to the hiking area there; its operating hours are seasonal. Check the current lift schedules before planning your trip.
The Schatzberg toboggan run starts at the middle station of the gondola lift and descends through the forest to Auffach. Its seasonal operation may change, so it is advisable to check the dates before your trip. In summer, cheese tours are offered at Schönangeralm; their seasonal availability may also change.
Family Activities and Local Culture
Drachental Family Park offers action-packed attractions in both summer and winter. These include an adventure mini-golf course with 18 holes. The park’s Drachenflitzer Alpine Coaster operates regardless of the weather and features banked turns at heights of up to 25 metres. Drachental offers a range of experiences, from mini-golf to a ride on the coaster.
The z'Bach Mountain Farming Museum is housed in an original farmhouse preserved from 1795. With more than 1,200 exhibits, it shows the harsh life once lived by Tyrolean mountain farmers. Guided tours of the herb garden introduce visitors to medicinal herbs, ointments and teas.
Krautinger is a turnip schnapps made from white stubble turnips and distilled exclusively in Wildschönau. Fifteen farmers still uphold the tradition of Krautinger distilling under the historic distilling rights. Together, schnapps distilling, herb garden tours and summer cheese tours offer insights into different aspects of local culture.
