See in Paznaun offers several perspectives for planning your trip: a natural toboggan run, mountain activities in the warmer months, and a history that can be traced through specific places. The name See comes from the fact that a lake once covered the valley floor at See. At the heart of the village is the Spiel-, Sport- und Wasserpark, located where a lake stood for centuries before disappearing in a landslide in 1433.

Toboggan run and winter planning

The natural toboggan run in See is six kilometres long and descends around 700 metres in altitude. When there is enough snow, the toboggan run is illuminated from 7:30 pm to 11:00 pm. The lighting provides a specific time frame for winter planning, but is explicitly dependent on snow conditions. So if you would like to include the toboggan run in your visit, check in advance whether there is enough snow.

The elevation difference covered on a ride with the Medrig Carts is also specified: 424 metres, from 2,224 to 1,800 metres. Compared with the toboggan run’s approximately 700-metre elevation difference, the stated difference is smaller. For the natural toboggan run, the length of six kilometres is also specified; for the carts, the starting and ending elevations are given. This lets you compare the two activities using their different measurements.

Activities in the warmer months

In the warmer months, the Medrigjochbahn cable car takes visitors to starting points for family-friendly hiking routes and various mountain adventures. The Bike & Hike See – Rotpleiskopf route starts at the valley station of the Medrigjochbahn. These are two specific points of reference for planning: a seasonal lift service and the named starting point of the route.

Another mountain destination is Alpe Gamperthun. It lies on a level area just above the tree line, at an elevation of 2,057 metres. From there, you can enjoy views of the highest and most beautiful mountain peaks in Paznaun and down the valley as far as Grins. Alpe Gamperthun serves its own homemade Paznaun alpine cheese and other local specialities. The elevation and level terrain describe its location, the view describes the scenery, and the specialities complement the landscape with local products.

Settlement history and the Marienkapelle chapel

The settlement of See was founded in the 13th century by farmers from Serfaus and Fiss. The Marienkapelle chapel is in Habigen; it is the only chapel in See where services are still held regularly. In 1882, Josef Mallaun funded the construction of the chapel. The historical timeline therefore stretches from the settlement’s founding in the 13th century to Mallaun’s funding of the chapel’s construction.

Travel season as a guide when looking for a hotel

If you are looking for a hotel in See, you can use the time of year as your first filter. The toboggan run is illuminated when there is enough snow; in the warmer months, the Medrigjochbahn takes visitors to hiking routes and mountain adventures. Check the relevant conditions in advance if you would like to make one of these activities a fixed part of your trip.
