In Bichl, a winter hike, trails to mountain huts, a forest trail with a bird-feeding station and a historic smelting furnace come together. The hamlet is the destination of a winter route from Prägraten and the starting point for the High Alpine Pilgrims’ Path to Stabanthütte and for the main ascent to Neue Sajathütte. The Bichl Forest Trail ends with a panorama of the three-thousand-metre peaks of the Lasörling Group; a cycling route to Stabanthütte also passes through Bichl. This gives you several clear themes to consider when planning your trip: winter hiking, hikes to mountain huts, cycling and the history of copper ore.

Winter Trails Towards Bichl and Hinterbichl

The Prägraten–Bichl Forest Trail (sunny terrace) winter hiking trail leads from the tourist information office in Prägraten a. G. to the hamlet of Bichl in about 30 minutes. A second winter route, Bichl–Hinterbichl, follows the municipal road to the hamlet and then continues towards Hinterbichl. The routes are easy to distinguish: Bichl is the destination of the first tour, while the second continues from there towards Hinterbichl.

Pilgrims’ Path to Stabanthütte

The section of the High Alpine Pilgrims’ Path from Bichl to Stabanthütte follows a well-marked and signposted hiking trail westwards, climbing gently through open larch forest. The hike takes about one hour. The Bichl car park (Stabant-/Sajathütte hiking car park) at 1,490 m is the starting point for the hike to Stabanthütte.

Bichl Forest Trail and Mountain Panorama

There is a bird-feeding station along the Bichl Forest Trail, where birds can feed from visitors’ hands. The trail ends with a panoramic view of the three-thousand-metre peaks of the Lasörling Group. Nature lovers can therefore focus on two distinct highlights: the bird-feeding station along the trail and the view of the peaks at the end.

Hut Ascent and Cycling Route

The main ascent to Neue SajathĂĽtte begins in the hamlet of Bichl and follows the Blumenweg trail over moderately difficult paths and trails. It takes 3.5 hours. Cycling route No. 130 to StabanthĂĽtte passes through Bichl and climbs 500 metres. The hike and cycling route differ in activity and planning considerations: duration and difficulty are key for the ascent, while elevation gain is the main consideration for the cycling route.

Compare Time Required and Trail Destinations

The routes can be compared by their destinations and the time they take: the winter trail from the tourist information office in Prägraten to Bichl takes about 30 minutes, the section to Stabanthütte around one hour, and the main ascent to Neue Sajathütte 3.5 hours. These time frames range from a short winter hike to a considerably longer ascent to a mountain hut. There is also a dedicated cycling route to Stabanthütte; its 500 metres of elevation gain is a different planning consideration from hiking times.

Smelting Furnace and Copper Ore

A smelting furnace has been preserved in Bichl to this day. It separated copper ore from waste rock. Copper ore was mined at Kreuzspitze in the 15th century. The furnace illustrates the ore-processing stage, while the historic mining at Kreuzspitze points to another aspect of copper history.
