Discover Ostermiething
Accommodation in Ostermiething
Ostermiething offers a range of reasons to visit: the protected Salzach floodplain, historic rooms, frescoes and the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary. There is also an outdoor swimming pool with a 54-metre water slide, as well as a rail connection from Salzburg. If you would like to combine nature with local history, bear in mind the different conditions when planning your visit: the frescoes require advance registration, and the date matters for the steel symposium.
Nature in the Salzach floodplain
The Salzach floodplain is a protected natural area and can be explored on foot. The area is also criss-crossed by well-maintained cycle paths. Ostermiething is also on international cycling and hiking routes. If you are planning a tour, check the specific route beforehand. This lets you consider the paths through the floodplain and the long-distance routes as different options for a hike or bike ride, without assuming a particular route.
Local history and religious art
At WZO, Weilhartstraße 49, the Haus der Ringe contains three medieval rooms that are protected historic monuments. Information and exhibits on Ostermiething’s history are available there. The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary has its own focus on architectural and art history: the present-day church was rebuilt between 1676 and 1682. Its furnishings include a wooden high altar with rich, gilded acanthus decoration. The main feature is a statue of the Virgin Mary and Child dating from 1510. The two dates refer to different things: 1676 to 1682 is when the present-day church was rebuilt, while 1510 is the year of the statue of Mary. Acanthus refers to a leaf ornament and briefly describes the altar’s decoration.
The “Upside-Down World” frescoes
The late Gothic dry frescoes in the former rectory date from the 15th century. Their motifs show fish in trees and birds in water, reversing familiar associations. The frescoes are located in a rectangular barrel vault measuring 6.2 metres in length. The term describes a curved vault that extends lengthwise. A visit must be booked in advance; groups are limited to a maximum of eight people, and the visit lasts about an hour. If you plan to visit, register in advance and allow for the limited group size and approximate duration.
Other protected sites and reasons to visit
Protected historic sites also include the Bavarian burial ground at Sinzing in the locality of Ernsting and the Weitfeld Chapel in the locality of Steinbach, also known as Dietrich Chapel. Both are protected as historic monuments by an order under Section 3. The field or wayside chapel at Pfarrweg 4 is protected by regulation. The different place names help distinguish these sites: Ernsting, Steinbach and Pfarrweg each refer to a separate location.
A steel symposium is held every year at Stahlpark Riedersbach, where new sculptures are made. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the specific date. The Ostermiething outdoor swimming pool has a 54-metre water slide, offering another specific activity.
Getting there and planning
Ostermiething can be reached from Salzburg by the Salzburg Local Railway; the station is called Ostermiething. Check current services before travelling. It is also worth checking the specific routes of the international cycling and hiking paths before choosing a route. This lets you tailor your plans to your choice of rail travel, paths through the Salzach floodplain, a pre-booked visit, or a possible event date.
