Visitors choosing Palting for a trip will find several starting points for planning: three combinable hiking trails, Lake Imsee in the nature reserve, and historic buildings and craft traditions. The trails can be combined in several ways; their lengths and routes provide a practical basis for choosing a tour to suit your interests.

Compare hiking routes by length and route

The Weikertsham Circular Trail starts at the GH Kobler car park and passes through Bergham, Heming, Bachlschmiede, Rutzung, and Dietersham. It ends at the Beham farm track, where panoramic views of the surrounding area await. The route is about 4 km long. The marked Mattigrund Trail is also around 4 km long: from the church square, it heads toward Lake Imsee through the Mattigtal to Mödenham and Dietersham, then returns to Palting.

The main difference between these two trails of roughly equal length is their described route: the Weikertsham Circular Trail passes through several districts before reaching the Beham farm track, while the Mattigrund Trail runs through the Mattigtal and returns to Palting. At about 6.5 km, the Ödwanderweg is longer. It starts in Mundenham at the GH Fürst car park and leads via the Berndorfer Bach, Stockham, Bachlschmiede, and Dietersham to Palting. A southern variant leads to the “Traumeck” viewpoint in Hiltenwiesen; the Vitzthum home weaving workshop is on the way there. Since the three hiking trails overlap at several points, you can combine them in any way you like.

Lake Imsee and the Ice Age landscape

Lake Imsee is a small lake in the “Imsee” nature reserve. It formed in a dead-ice hollow on the eastern edge of the Ice Age Salzach Glacier. As well as the protected natural environment, the lake offers a glimpse into the area's geological history. Lake Imsee is also home to a remarkable variety of rare birds and plants. Those interested in these topics will find nature and geological history closely connected here.

Church, mill, and weaving history

Palting Parish Church is a single-nave Gothic church with Baroque furnishings and elaborate early Rococo stucco. It was built in 1325; the early Rococo stucco dates from 1740 and is by Johann Michael Vierthaler. The Marian Chapel also contains an Altötting Madonna altar from the workshop of Meinrad Guggenbichler, created in 1717. The church thus combines medieval origins with later phases of furnishing. Another trace of history is the Laimhaus Mill in the municipality of Palting, a very well-preserved mill dating from the 16th century.

The Vitzthum home weaving workshop also connects Palting with its craft history. In 1896, Maria and Franz Vitzthum of Mundenham No. 2 learned the weaving trade from a textile specialist from the former Czechoslovakia. The workshop's product range included linen, Gradl fabric, towels, and red-and-blue checked bedding. The workshop's location on the route to the southern variant of the Ă–dwanderweg connects this historical insight with a practical route option.
