Discover Aschach an der Donau
Accommodation in Aschach an der Donau
Aschach an der Donau offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: the Passau–Linz Danube Cycle Path, cultural history, walks and regular events. If you are looking for a hotel in Aschach, you can first consider which aspect matters most for your stay. The local attractions offer a variety of highlights—from fishing and architectural history to trails and events.
On the Danube Cycle Path: Museum and Fishing History
The Aschach Shipbuilding and Fishing Museum is located directly on the Passau–Linz Danube Cycle Path, at the Aschach cycling information point on the right bank of the Danube. This places the museum directly on a named cycling route. The 20th Roman rest stop in Aschach is also on the Upper Austrian Danube Cycle Path.
The Upper Austrian Fishing Museum explores the development of fishing gear and fishing methods, as well as the craft of fishing and commercial fishing. The Shipbuilding and Fishing Museum also displays models of wooden boats once built in Aschach. This brings together the themes of fishing and the former production of wooden boats in Aschach.
Another Danube-related feature is the sgraffito on the Shipbuilding and Fishing Museum, which depicts a tow of ships on the Danube. The sgraffito was created in 1960 during the renovation of the former administrative building of the river engineering authority. Along with the wooden boat models, it offers a different perspective on shipping: one through the former boatbuilding in Aschach, the other through the depiction of a tow of ships.
Architectural History and Art
Aschach Castle was built in 1539 by Wolfgang von Liechtenstein. Aschach Parish Church dates from the heyday of the 16th century and was renovated and extended by architect Clemens Holzmeister. Both places offer historical points of reference, but their architectural histories differ: the castle’s construction date is recorded, while the church’s description includes its renovation and extension.
The parish church is also home to the “Kripperlboot,” a hand-carved relief created by sculptor Ägydius Gamsjäger in 1984. Together with the sgraffito on the museum, it shows how artworks can take up Aschach’s connection to the Danube in different ways: as a relief in the church and as a depiction of a tow of ships on the museum.
Walks and Routes
The “Path of the Senses” cultural trail runs from Kirchenplatz to Schopperplatz, along the “Golden Row” of listed townhouses. Both named squares and the row of houses are therefore part of the route. The Danube promenade is also ideal for leisurely walks.
The Danube Trail offers a different perspective on the route, running from Passau through Aschach to Linz. While the Shipbuilding and Fishing Museum is directly on the Passau–Linz Danube Cycle Path, Aschach is named as a stop on the Danube Trail between Passau and Linz. This distinguishes a specific connection to the cycle path from a trail that passes through the town.
Monthly Events
The Schmankerl market takes place monthly from March to November, right on the Danube promenade, and offers regional products. If you are planning a visit, check the specific dates in the current municipal calendar.
The night watchman walks with Hubert Krexhammer take place on the last Friday of every month through the old Danube market town. They focus on stories and legends, the mysterious and the past. The two offerings therefore have different highlights: the Schmankerl market focuses on regional products, while the night watchman walks bring the old Danube market town to life through storytelling.
Plan Your Stay
If the Schmankerl market is important to your plans, take its dates into account when choosing when to visit.
