Waldburg combines sacred art, reminders of technological history and hiking trails of varying lengths. If you are looking for a hotel in Waldburg, these themes can help you choose the focus of your stay: churches, hiking or historical miniatures. The trails range from the 1 km Spechtweg to the 23 km 8 Linden-Weg.

Churches and Technological History

Waldburg Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. Its three late Gothic winged altarpieces depict scenes from the saint’s life as a penitent; carved side altars are dedicated to Saint Lawrence and Saint Wolfgang. The furnishings thus combine scenes from the life of the church’s patron saint with dedications to other saints.

St. Peter’s Parish Church offers a different historical connection: it was first mentioned in a document in 1241. Located about three kilometres west of Freistadt, it stands on a hill at an elevation of around 700 m and is clearly visible from far away. The date of its first documented mention and its prominent location each give this church a distinct character.

The viaduct over the Kronbach is also part of Waldburg’s technological history. The structure is a protected monument and remains almost unchanged to this day. The 6 km Pferdeeisenbahn-Viadukt-Weg leads from Waldburg through the Kronbach Valley, past the Bodenmühle and the horse-drawn railway viaduct. This makes it possible to combine an interest in the historic railway with a route that takes in other named places in the valley.

Hiking Trails by Length and Theme

The 1 km Spechtweg is a walking trail with signs about local plant and animal life. It includes fitness stations and a barefoot path, and was designed especially for children. If these features are important to your plans, check their current condition before your visit. The 3.7 km Seppenhöhen-Weg is longer and offers panoramic views from the Sternstein over the Viehberg to the Ötscher. The two trails therefore differ both in length and focus: nature signs and facilities on the Spechtweg, and panoramic views on the Seppenhöhen-Weg.

At 6 km, the Pferdeeisenbahn-Viadukt-Weg is longer than the 3.3 km Mühlenweg. The latter leads from Waldburg past the Teufelstein and down to the Mittermühle, then west through the Kronbach Valley to the Ortmühle, an old power station. While the Pferdeeisenbahn-Viadukt-Weg passes the Bodenmühle and the viaduct, the Mühlenweg’s route description features the Mittermühle and Ortmühle. Both trails run through the Kronbach Valley, but highlight different destinations.

Those considering a longer route can look at the 23 km 8 Linden-Weg, which runs through the municipality of Waldburg. The eight jubilee linden trees symbolise Waldburg’s eight centuries of history as a former medieval clearing centre. This gives the trail’s name a historical connection that goes beyond its length.

Miniagrimundus and Getting There

Miniagrimundus features more than 100 faithful miniatures depicting rural life in the 19th and 20th centuries. They were created by Johann Hochreiter, a master wheelwright and agricultural machinery builder from Waldburg. The collection’s subject and creator’s name connect its portrayal of historical everyday life with Waldburg. Miniagrimundus is closed until the end of 2026 while the elementary school is being renovated. If you are considering a visit after that, check its status before you travel.
