Gmunden on Lake Traunsee
Accommodation in Gmunden
Gmunden is situated at the northern end of Lake Traunsee. Ceramics, the town’s history and its cultural program shape one aspect of a stay; the lake and Grünberg offer other themes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Gmunden, these different interests can guide your travel plans: would you like to focus mainly on crafts and history, or plan activities on the water and in the mountains?
Ceramic tradition in the town
Gmunden’s ceramic history dates back to the Middle Ages: the salt trade helped establish a ceramics scene here. Gmundner Keramik was founded in 1492. The flame decoration technique is also part of the history of the craft; it is included in Austria’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Gmundner Keramik manufactory continues to practice this technique. This theme therefore offers a glimpse of both historical development and a living craft tradition.
The Ceramic Trail leads through Gmunden and draws attention to large and small ceramic treasures in public spaces. It turns the spotlight on ceramics outside an exhibition and offers a different way to encounter them than a visit to a museum. A specific time of year is relevant for the Austrian Potters’ Market: it takes place every year on the last weekend in August. The market showcases contemporary ceramic work in a wide variety of forms from different workshops. Check the exact dates for your travel year.
Town history and cultural program
The K-Hof, Kammerhof Museum Gmunden, presents a chronological overview of the history of the town and the Lake Traunsee region in five sections. The timeline stretches from the beginnings of geological history to the 21st century. Another historic attraction is Seeschloss Ort, one of the oldest buildings in the Salzkammergut region. The Capuchin Church houses works of art from the 17th century, including the statue “Christ in the Dungeon.”
Recurring cultural events can also be important when planning your dates. Liebstatt Sunday is celebrated in Gmunden on the fourth Sunday of Lent; the tradition has existed here since 1641. The Salzkammergut Festwochen Gmunden is a multidisciplinary cultural program. It includes music projects, innovative formats, as well as drama and theater. The Potters’ Market, Liebstatt Sunday and the festival weeks thus represent different cultural themes and times of year.
Since summer 2025, the permanent installation “La Communication” has been located in the center of Gmunden’s Rathausplatz. Together with the works of art in the Capuchin Church, it offers another way to encounter art in public spaces: here, there is a contemporary installation; there, works from the 17th century are on display.
Lake Traunsee and GrĂĽnberg
A trip on Lake Traunsee aboard a historic paddle steamer dating from 1871 offers views of the mountain panorama. GrĂĽnberg, above Gmunden, offers a different kind of experience: there are 20 kilometers of well-maintained hiking trails and signposted cycling routes. A trail length is specified for hiking; cycling focuses on marked routes. For the nature-focused part of your stay, you can weigh up a trip on the lake against activities on GrĂĽnberg without treating them as the same kind of excursion.
Cultural events or outdoor activities?
When planning, it’s worth distinguishing between ongoing attractions and events that take place on specific dates. The Ceramic Trail, the town’s history and the works of art mentioned above offer cultural and historical points of interest; the Potters’ Market, on the other hand, takes place on the last weekend in August, and Liebstatt Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent. If you’d like to plan your stay around one of these traditions or events, check the date for the relevant travel year. For a nature-focused stay, you can choose between different activities: a trip on Lake Traunsee, or hiking and cycling trails on Grünberg.
