Discover Peuerbach
Accommodation in Peuerbach
Peuerbach can be explored through several themes: Gothic houses in the town centre, ecclesiastical architectural history, astronomical attractions, and routes to historic sites and former cultural landscapes. These highlights can help you plan your search for a hotel in Peuerbach. Consider whether you would like to focus mainly on architecture, depictions of the cosmos, or a historical or natural history route.
Gothic lanes and architectural history
The Gothic town centre includes numerous Gothic houses around Kirchenplatz, HauptstraĂźe and Fleischergasse. The narrow Fleischergasse is known for its flying buttresses. The historic townscape thus brings both entire rows of houses and a distinctive architectural detail into view. The flying buttresses add a unique accent to the larger ensemble of Gothic houses.
The first Peuerbach Castle was built around 1370 by the Counts of Schaunberg. Peuerbach Castle Museum houses the exhibition “Cosmos. New Worlds – Georg von Peuerbach and His Legacy”. As the exhibition programme may change, check before your visit whether the exhibition will be on during your stay. Groups can also visit outside opening hours with advance notice; please check this option in advance.
The history of the parish church’s construction goes back to the Peasants’ Wars of 1626: after Peuerbach was burned down, reconstruction of the church began in 1628 and continued until around the middle of the 17th century. The parish church was partially remodelled in the Baroque style and extended. The Little Church of Mariahilf escaped the fire and was also later remodelled in the Baroque style. It was probably founded around 1500 by Barbara von Wallsee; its late Gothic design points to this interpretation.
The cosmos and astronomy
KOMETOR stands in Peuerbach Castle Park and is designed as a gateway to the world of the stars. The walk-through sculpture is made up of pentagons and extends across two levels. Its first level is interactive: specially created microscopic images are presented alongside images from ESA satellites and telescopes. This brings together a microscopic view and images of space in the same presentation. KOMETOR thus combines a spatial sculpture with a visual comparison of different perspectives.
The Astro Trail offers a different focus. It follows the Ledererbach stream; information boards explain the planets of our solar system and the zodiac signs, including their astrological significance. The Astro Trail also includes a planetarium and a star chart. While KOMETOR stands out for its walk-through pentagonal form and the juxtaposition of images, the Astro Trail presents its theme through boards and other named features. These different formats can help you decide between a spatial sculpture and explanatory stops.
Routes through history and nature
The walking route “Eventful Tracing in Peuerbach” leads from Peuerbach Castle to the original site of the first battle of the 1626 Peasants’ Revolt, on Ledererwiese. The Alm-Mühlen-Runde, by contrast, runs through the former “Valley of the Seven Mills”. In the past, powerful water wheels there drove mills and hammer mills. The tracing route focuses on a specific event and its location, while the Alm-Mühlen-Runde focuses on the former use of hydropower. The two descriptions therefore highlight different aspects of history and do not tell the same kind of story.
The Upper Austrian Nature Conservation Association offers natural history tours through the diverse animal and plant life of the Koaserin. Registration is handled at the town hall. If you would like to include a tour in your plans, check the current registration arrangements in advance.
Craftsmanship at the Shoemaking and Traditions Museum
The Shoemaking and Traditions Museum displays tools and machines used in the shoemaking trade over many generations. The exhibits come from the shoemaking workshop of Karl Kaltseis in Eschenau. The focus is specifically on the tools and their origins in a particular workshop. Together with the exhibition at the castle museum and the historic buildings, this adds to the cultural themes you can consider when looking for a hotel in Peuerbach.
