Etzelsdorf combines the history of Seisenburg Castle with several routes that lead to or pass by the ruins. Seisenburg Castle is a listed historic complex; for travelers, a recurring festival and the specific courses of individual trails also shape the picture. You can therefore consider the historical context, a possible festival date, and different routes as separate points of reference when planning your trip.

Seisenburg Castle: History and Architectural Traces

Seisenburg Castle in Etzelsdorf is a listed historic complex, with wall remains and foundations at Burgweg 1. Seisenburg has been documented in written records since the beginning of the 12th century. The historical context and the architectural remains complement each other: alongside its early mention, the wall remains and foundations shape the impression of the complex. In tourist routes, the same place appears as the Seisenburg ruins. You therefore encounter Seisenburg both as a listed historic complex and as ruins along the route.

Festival and Castle Mass

The Seisenburg Friends Association holds a festival every other summer, followed by a Castle Mass. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the date in advance.

Routes to the Ruins

The routes differ primarily in their destinations and sequences. The Ritterweg in Pettenbach (K30) leads to the Seisenburg ruins. The Beerrunde passes by the ruins; its route follows K31 to the Jägersteig and the Seisenburg ruins. It is rated “very easy.” The Jägersteig-Runde also passes by the ruins. On the route to Pernecker Kogel (K32), the Seisenburg ruins and Ederbild are included in the route before it reaches Pernecker Kogel. Thus, K30 names the ruins as its destination, while K32 continues past other named points to Pernecker Kogel.

On the route to Pernecker Kogel, the Panoramaplatz offers views of Schlierbach and the upper Kremstal valley. When choosing a route, you can also distinguish between the destinations described: the Ritterweg focuses on the ruins as its endpoint; K32 continues to Pernecker Kogel and includes the view from the Panoramaplatz.

Getting There and Planning Your Route

Route 70 connects Scharnstein, Pettenbach, Seisenburg, Magdalenaberg, and Vorchdorf, in that order. Check the latest information before traveling for the timetable and any advance booking requirements; these may change.

The OÖVV bus line 456 is also relevant for the Jägersteig-Runde: it serves the Pettenbach Etzelsdorf stop. From there, it is about 2.3 kilometers to the starting point of the loop. Check the timetable before your trip as well. The two notes help with different questions: Route 70 names a connection between five places, while line 456 identifies a specific stop and the approximate distance from there to the start of the Jägersteig-Runde.
