Wartberg an der Krems: Local History and Routes
Accommodation in Wartberg an der Krems
Wartberg an der Krems combines a town centre shaped by the Late Gothic period with insights into local crafts and history. It also offers cycling and hiking trails that reveal different sides of the town. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay here, these themes can help you decide how to balance culture and outdoor activities according to your interests.
Townscape and Church History
Wartberg an der Krems’ town centre is dominated by the Late Gothic parish church with its Baroque tower. Next to it stands the Late Gothic St Anne’s Chapel, completed in 1527. Its lower level serves as a charnel house, or ossuary.
The parish church is dedicated to Saint Kilian. Its history is linked to the 1083 endowment of a place known as “Wartperch” by Bishop Altmann of Passau. The early endowment of the settlement and the completion of St Anne’s Chapel in 1527 are thus two points of reference from different periods. Together, the church and chapel offer insights into architectural and ecclesiastical history, while the local heritage museum complements this focus with a look at earlier working and everyday life.
Local Heritage Museum and Crafts
The Wartberg local heritage museum houses a diverse collection of tools, equipment and household items once used in agriculture, crafts and domestic life in Wartberg and the surrounding area. Its focus is not limited to a single trade, but covers several aspects of everyday life in the town.
Visitors can see a well-equipped wheelwright’s workshop and a farrier’s and cartwright’s forge, with original items belonging to the master craftsman. These workshops bring the craft aspect of the collection to life, while the other objects also cover agriculture and domestic life.
Cycling and Hiking
The Kremstal Trail follows the Krems from Klaus, past the source of the Krems and through Micheldorf and Wartberg an der Krems, to its confluence with the Traun. The named sections place Wartberg along a longer river route that extends beyond the town. Bicycles can be carried on trains on the Pyhrnbahn along the entire route between Traun and Klaus. If you plan to combine train travel and cycling, check the current conditions for taking bicycles on board before you set off.
There are also specific landmarks for hikers: a hiking trail follows the Pyhrnbahn railway and the Krems to the Buglmühle small hydroelectric plant. Near Pöllhub, a section offers views of Wartberg and the nearby mountains across the Kremstal valley. The Hubertus Chapel at Höllgraben is a good place to take a break and enjoy the views. This means there is a longer cycling route along the Krems, as well as named hiking destinations and viewpoints for those with different priorities.
Farmers’ Market
The farmers’ market is in the same building as the Neuhauser inn. It uses the premises of the former Schlecker store at Hauptstraße 25. If you are planning a visit, check the current local information in advance.
