Neuhofen an der Krems offers a range of options for your stay: hiking trails, churches and memorial sites, as well as opportunities for play and exercise. The Krems River is also available as a bathing spot in the Neuhofen area. Depending on your interests, you can focus your time on a tour, local history or outdoor leisure activities.

Hiking trails and orientation

Three hiking trails between 10 and 15 km long run through the municipal area of Neuhofen. The ARNULF hiking trail is listed as 14 km long. This puts it four kilometres above the lower end and one kilometre below the upper end of that range. The Arnulf Trail initially follows the Krems River, passes Weißenberg Castle and returns to Neuhofen through woods and fields.

Hiking trail maps at the starting points at Neuhofen railway station and on Kirchenplatz in front of the municipal offices provide information about the routes. From Neuhofen railway station, one route leads through the “Schwarze Wegerl” to the centre, crossing the Krems River and its tributary channels along the way. Distance information and maps are helpful in different ways: the kilometre figures indicate the trail lengths, while the maps provide information about the routes. According to the municipality, the hiking trails are easy to walk in every season, as they mostly follow farm tracks.

Churches and historical landmarks

The parish church of Neuhofen an der Krems consists of St. Benedict’s Church and St. Matthew’s Church. The present Gothic building of St. Matthew’s Church was built in 1454; this date refers to that building, not to the parish church as a whole.

The Marian column, dating from 1713, stands in the town centre. The market square has an elongated triangular layout; in other words, its ground plan is long and triangular. Streets lead north and south from its tip.

A memorial stone in front of the castle commemorates the “Battle of Gschwendt” on 17 August 1626 during the Upper Austrian Peasants’ War. The date refers to the battle, not to the year the memorial stone was built. The years 1454, 1626 and 1713 mark different points of reference: the present Gothic church building, the battle being commemorated and the Marian column. This makes it easy to distinguish the building, historical event and column chronologically.

Play, sports and swimming

At the leisure centre at Sportallee 60, the skate park has facilities for bicycles, scooters and boards; the multi-purpose court is intended for football, basketball and other ball games. The leisure centre offers two types of activity, distinguished by how you move: activities using wheels or boards, and ball games.

The playgrounds in Neuhofen an der Krems offer a variety of play and exercise equipment adapted to different age groups. If you want to choose a play area based on age group, this adaptation provides a useful point of reference. The playground next to the Neuhofen outdoor swimming pool is accessible with a valid pool admission ticket; take this admission requirement into account when planning your visit.

The Krems River can be used as a bathing spot in the Neuhofen area. Swimming in the Krems is another leisure option alongside sports and play.
