Discover Naarn im Machlande
Accommodation in Naarn im Machlande
If you’re looking for a hotel in Naarn im Machlande, you can choose your destination based on the themes that matter for your trip: churches and local history, cycling or activities on the Danube. Naarn offers several distinct points of interest in this regard. The local features below can help you plan your stay around specific sights and activities.
Churches and local history
Naarn Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel and is one of the oldest churches in the MĂĽhlviertel. Built around 1070, it is Romanesque in style. Inside the church, the Baroque high altar from 1732 is a later feature. This makes it easy to distinguish the Romanesque church building from the Baroque altar in terms of their dates.
Another religious site is the Maria Laab pilgrimage church, first mentioned in a document in 1092. Its Gothic sculpture “Coronation of the Virgin Mary” is well worth seeing. For cultural exploration, you can choose between two churches, each with its own historical associations and named work of art.
The Naarn im Machlande local history museum also connects with the history of the area. The building was first mentioned in 1796; in 1989, the market town of Naarn acquired it to establish a local history museum there. When the complex reopened in June 2014, the program included an exhibition about boat towing, timber rafting on the Aist and Danube timber rafting. These topics link the history of rivers and transport with the region.
Cycling, circular trail and the Danube
The recreation area has a swimming lake and a beach volleyball court. The Danube by the recreation area is suitable for activities including boating in a Zille. There are several different activities to choose from: spending time at the swimming lake, playing beach volleyball and taking a trip on the river are different ways to enjoy the area.
The alternative cycling route “Ins Machland einischaun” (“A look into Machland”) passes through the municipality of Naarn and the market towns of Au and Naarn. Along the way, it passes typical quadrangle farms and country inns, as well as a short stretch of untouched floodplain forest. The route then rejoins the Danube Cycle Path. The places along the route and the change between farmland and floodplain forest are specific features to look out for as you navigate.
The Aulehrpfad nature trail is a circular route that can be walked in either direction. Depending on your direction, it takes you through the themes “Habitats of Machland” or “Experiences of Machland.” This gives you a clear way to choose your direction based on the theme that interests you. The Aulehrpfad also includes an observation tower overlooking the fish ladder. Check the trail details again before your trip.
Austria’s largest fish ladder is located in the district of Au an der Donau in Naarn. An observation tower at the fish ladder offers views of the facility and wide vistas across the Machland plains. The Au/Donau boatmen’s and raftsmen’s chapel is right beside the Danube Cycle Path; check access information before visiting.
