Eitzing: Churches, History and Leisure
Accommodation in Eitzing
Eitzing combines local and church history with practical opportunities for exercise and leisure. Historical highlights include the castle of the Edlen von Izing, the rectory, and the area’s long church tradition. For active days, consider the Probenzing loop trail, paths along the Kretschbach, and the Antiesen cycle path.
History and Church Tradition
In the 12th century, a splendid castle belonging to the Edlen von Izing (Eitzing) stood on a hill in Eitzing. From the 14th century onward, Eitzing became known through the long rule of the Edlen zu Eitzing. From around 1400 to 1785, Eitzing was a filial church of the Aurolzmünster parish. These dates offer different insights into the town’s history: its ruling arrangements and its religious development.
The rectory also has several historical construction phases. It was built under Emperor Joseph II (1780–1790) and rebuilt in 1849. The dates therefore distinguish the original building from its later reconstruction. The Catholic Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary and the cemetery in Eitzing are protected as historic monuments by decree. Eitzing is also associated with Rococo works by the famous Schwanthaler family.
Eitzing’s church tradition also includes the Cantemus church choir, which looks back on more than 100 years of history. The youth choir independently leads Masses. If you would like to attend such a service during your stay, check the date in advance, as some dates may change.
Hiking and Cycling Around Eitzing
The Probenzing loop is an approximately 4.4-kilometer circular hiking trail around Eitzing. The approximate distance gives you a concrete reference point when planning a hike. You can also hike along the Kretschbach.
Eitzing lies in a hilly area on both sides of the Kretschbach. The stream offers different options for leisure: you can hike along its course, and anglers consider it an ideal fishing spot. When planning, you can choose between an activity on foot and fishing along the Kretschbach.
The Antiesen cycle path runs directly through Eitzing, and cycling is also a local leisure activity. If you plan to use the cycle path, check the current route conditions before setting out. Maps showing public hiking trails in Eitzing are available from the municipality. If you need a map for your trip, ask there in advance about current availability.
Leisure Activities in Town
The central playground in Eitzing has play equipment for children of all ages. A public restroom is right next door. The two facilities are therefore immediately adjacent and can be considered together when planning a visit to the town center.
The all-weather court can be booked for tennis, basketball, and volleyball by contacting the municipality. Contacting the municipality is therefore part of the planning if you would like to play one of these sports on the court.
At Biohof Zeilinger, the visitor program can be supplemented with sheep milking and feeding, milk tasting, and hay jumping. These activities are optional additions to the program. If one of them is important to you, ask in advance whether it will be available during your visit.
