Reichersberg: Abbey, Inn River Meadows and Church Art
Accommodation in Reichersberg
The Canons’ Path adds a specific route to the picture; the Abbey also hosts an arts and crafts market every November. This helps you decide whether culture, nature or a particular event date is the main focus of your trip.
Abbey, History and Church Art
According to tradition, Reichersberg Augustinian Canons’ Abbey was founded in 1084. Wernher and Dietburga of Reichersberg endowed a monastery at their castle. After a devastating fire in 1624, the Abbey was replaced by a Baroque building over the course of the 17th century. Today, it is one of Upper Austria’s most important Baroque buildings. During guided tours of the Abbey, visitors are shown the church, cloister and library. The history of the house thus stretches from its traditional founding to its Baroque reconstruction; a tour also takes in several named interior spaces.
The Abbey parish church of St Michael also offers its own perspective on art history: it features ceiling frescoes by Munich court painter Christian Wink, created in 1778/79. At the same time, the church invites visitors to pray, spend time and pause for reflection. Dobl Chapel provides a different religious and cultural focus. It was repeatedly the destination of processions and rogation walks, giving it a certain character as a place of pilgrimage. Popular piety and historical events shape the chapel, which is considered a heritage monument worthy of preservation. Reichersberg thus brings together Baroque architecture, individual works of art and traditional religious customs as distinct themes.
Trails and Inn River Meadows
The Canons’ Path starts in Reichersberg’s market square, follows the Abbey and crosses an old river channel on a wooden footbridge. The route is about 2.45 km long and has an elevation gain of 45 metres. This gives you a concrete idea of both the route’s length and its elevation profile; the market square, Abbey and footbridge add named waypoints to these figures. Separately, the Abbey lies directly on the Inn Cycle Path and the European Via Nova pilgrimage route. For travellers considering the area as part of a cycling or pilgrimage trip, these are two distinct routes that pass the same building.
You can explore the Inn River meadows in Reichersberg on foot or by bicycle, away from road traffic. The “Floodplain Forests on the Lower Inn” European protected area includes Reichersberg and covers a total of 579.26 ha. This figure describes the protected area’s total size; the nature experiences available locally also matter when choosing what to see. An easily accessible birdwatching station in Reichersberg offers a chance to experience nature firsthand. Check local signs before your visit. In spring and autumn, you can watch migratory birds along the Lower Inn. This makes it possible to distinguish the Inn meadows as a nature-focused attraction from birdwatching as a seasonal activity.
Arts and Crafts and the Abbey Wine Cellar
Held every November, the arts and crafts market at Reichersberg Abbey features around 100 exhibitors showcasing high-quality craftsmanship. The event takes place in the Abbey courtyard, the centuries-old cellar vaults and the Abbey’s grand rooms. If you want to plan your trip around the market, check the event dates in advance. This event therefore takes place at a different time of year from bird migration, which can be observed in spring and autumn.
The Abbey wine cellar offers wines, liqueurs and spirits distilled from its own produce, as well as products from other Austrian abbeys and monasteries. The selection may change. If a particular product is important to your visit, check the current selection. Together, these offer different travel highlights: architectural and church art, nature observation, a seasonal market and the wine cellar’s offerings.
