Freinberg offers several specific starting points for planning your trip: historic border sites, well-maintained trails with views, and cultural topics at the Old Forester’s House. When choosing a hotel for your stay, your interests in excursions can help you decide: Would you like to explore the border history, plan a panoramic circular trail, or learn about clay mining and dialect?

Border history at the chapel and along the stone trail

The Maria im Walde Chapel stands right on the border, by historic boundary stone no. 20 between Freinberg and Bavaria. It was built in 1919 and renovated in 1968 and 1987. The Passaublick-Severinsweg passes by the border chapel. The trail and the chapel offer two different ways to connect with the border history.

Along the route from Voglau (Schardenberg) to Achleiten (Freinberg), 42 historic boundary stones, bearing dates and alternating coats of arms, reflect the area’s history. The oldest stone stands in the forest shortly before Haibach and bears the date 1608. Unlike the single chapel, these landmarks are spread along a route. The two forms complement each other: the chapel marks a spot on the border, while the dated stones make the history visible along the course of the route described.

Panoramas and forest trails

The short, well-maintained Hinding panoramic circular trail offers views of the entire old town, including the confluence of the three rivers in Passau, the Danube Valley and the villages in the adjoining Bavarian Forest. It combines urban panoramas and views of the landscape on a short circular route.

The Edtwald Trail offers a different experience: it is a well-maintained mixed-forest trail that can be cycled; horse riding is also possible. By comparison, the Hinding circular trail focuses on a short, well-maintained loop with views, while the Edtwald Trail combines a forest setting with the activities mentioned. This lets you distinguish between the two routes by landscape and preferred activity.

Cultural sites and local history

Several local and nature-related themes come together at the Old Forester’s House in Freinberg. The clay museum explains the centuries of clay mining in Freinberg. An audio table explores the development of dialects in the dialect region of Freinberg and Passau-Bavaria. Alongside the history of clay mining, the cross-border linguistic landscape is also a focus here. Beside the Old Forester’s House, there is a beekeeping education station and the “BiWaNa” bee trail, located in an adjoining bee hut.

Freinberg Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Willibald; its high altar painting is by Josef Bergler. The parish church burned down in 1784. The local population then began building a new church. Its dedication, altar painting and the events of 1784 show different aspects of the church’s history.

More things to see and do during your stay

Local offerings include cider taverns selling products directly from the farm. If you plan to visit a cider tavern, check its current offerings in advance. The Freinberg Adventure Tower is being created from a converted feed silo on the grounds of the “Über den Dächern von Passau” golf course in the municipality of Freinberg. Its unusual starting structure sets the project apart from the chapels, parish church and historic boundary stones.
