Schardenberg offers several ways to plan your trip: pilgrim routes and pilgrimages, churches and chapels, a small local history museum, as well as nature trails and cycling routes. You can choose the focus of your stay according to your interests—for example, a pilgrimage date, the course of a route or the history of the town.

Pilgrim Routes and Pilgrimage

The VIA NOVA is a European spiritual pilgrimage route open to all denominations. One of its stages leads from Passau across the green border to Schardenberg, downhill to Wernstein and then along the Inn to the Baroque town of Schärding. The route links several places and follows a cross-border course. Along the pilgrimage route, a path with several steps leads to the Engelskapelle (Angels’ Chapel).

Pilgrimage is also an important part of life in Schardenberg. The Fatima Days take place on the 13th of each month from May to October, and more than 1,000 people attend each year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the date for your chosen month in advance, as individual dates may change. This lets you plan your trip around the specific pilgrimage day rather than the season in general.

During a procession from the church to the Fatima shrine in the Fronwald, many pilgrims from near and far accompany a statue of the Virgin Mary. The Fatima Chapel was built from granite between 1948 and 1950 and has an outdoor altar. The procession, pilgrimage days and chapel illustrate different aspects of religious life: a shared journey, recurring dates and a place with its own architectural history.

Church Architecture and Rural Life

The “Innviertel Cathedral” in Schardenberg was built in Baroque style from granite from the Fronwald. Schardenberg parish church also has a special historical connection: its foundation stone comes from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The material, architectural style and origin of the foundation stone offer different points of reference for exploring the history of the local churches.

Another way to explore the town’s history is to visit the two-storey Troadkasten, dating from 1782. Its upper floor houses a small local history museum with old equipment used to process flax and numerous items from the everyday lives of farmers and craftspeople. This brings former working practices and everyday objects into focus alongside the churches. The Troadkasten and the churches therefore tell different parts of the region’s history.

Natural Areas and Cycling Routes

The Lower Inn European Nature Reserve also includes Schardenberg. It is a cross-border protected area of international importance. Its habitats include those for birds, amphibians, dragonflies and beavers. Alongside pilgrim routes and cultural heritage, this protected area adds a natural dimension to trip planning; the habitats mentioned support a variety of animal groups.

For cycling, the Bavarian-Austrian “Lower Inn” nature and adventure trail offers a separate route. It is designated as an international cycle route and passes through the municipality of Schardenberg towards Passau. The VIA NOVA stage and the cycle route differ in their stated focus: the pilgrimage stage highlights the sequence of Passau, Schardenberg, Wernstein and Schärding, as well as its spiritual character; the cycle route is identified by its Bavarian-Austrian name and its direction towards Passau.

To decide what suits you, you can weigh these options against one another: a pilgrimage day has a specific date, while the routes described are defined by their course and respective focus. Churches, the chapel and the Troadkasten add architectural history and everyday culture to these options. This way, you can choose Schardenberg based on what matters most to you during your stay.
