Discover Hellmonsödt
Accommodation in Hellmonsödt
Hellmonsödt combines hiking trails on the high plateau with winter cross-country skiing opportunities and places of historical and cultural interest. On the Hellmonsödt high plateau, circular hiking trails with panoramic views invite you to enjoy extended hikes. From Hellmonsödt, you can also enjoy views of the mountain ranges of the Alpine foothills. You can shape your stay around outdoor activities, winter pursuits or local history.
Hiking and themed trails
Established in 2006, the Hellmonsödt Planet Trail is a 4 km accessible circular trail. Information boards explain the planets and the solar system; the trail also has children’s play equipment and a picnic area. This combination brings together an astronomy theme and outdoor activity. Another option for families with younger children is the Hans Helmon Storybook Trail: this stroller-friendly circular trail is about 2.5 km long, with a walking time of around 40 minutes. It is shorter than the Planet Trail. The R3 Bird Nature Trail circuit was created by private individuals and is particularly suitable for children.
Cross-country skiing and outdoor pool
The cross-country skiing options vary in length and technique. The Panorama Trail is 4 or 6 km long, depending on the starting point. At Wasserwald Recreation Park, an approximately 1.2 km loop is groomed for both skating and classic-style skiing. As winter conditions and grooming can vary, check the latest conditions before setting out.
Hellmonsödt Outdoor Pool operates seasonally and is family-friendly. The adventure pool includes an underwater bench and a large water slide. There is also a children’s pool with a slide and adventure stream, as well as a beach volleyball court. The various areas make the pool a seasonal destination in its own right, alongside the trails and cultural sites.
Culture and local history
The Mittermayr heritage farm at the Pelmberg Open-Air Museum offers a vivid picture of historical working and living conditions on a Mühlviertel farm. The Mittermayr farm was first mentioned in a document in 1325. The open-air museum also features an 18 m long escape tunnel carved into granite, which visitors can walk through while stooping. A mountain bike route from the Pelmberg Open-Air Museum passes over steep climbs and descents.
The Starhemberg crypt in Hellmonsödt Parish Church contains a more than 400-year-old infant mummy. It is believed to have been Gregor von Starhemberg, who was born in 1566 and died in 1567. The Starhemberg family crypt chapel at Wildberg was added to the parish church around 1520. The war memorial was erected north of the parish church in 1925; its broken marble column symbolizes the soldiers’ sudden deaths.
The history of the construction of Hellmonsödt Monastery is also part of local history: construction began on 18 July 1927, and the monastery was consecrated on 3 April 1929. These dates provide a clear timeline for this chapter of local history.
