Sonnberg im Mühlkreis lies in the rolling hills typical of the Mühlviertel. Extensive forests, meadows and fields, along with beautiful farmhouses, shape the local landscape. Nature and outdoor activities are a key focus, complemented by several cultural points of interest. This lets you get a sense of the area through its landscape, activities and different cultural themes.

Rolling Hills and Activities

The hilly landscape is well suited to hiking. For cycling, there is a specific loop: the “S14 Hellmonsödt-Sonnberg-Reichenau Loop” passes through Sonnberg. This is a practical distinction when planning your day: the suitability for hiking is based on the type of landscape, while for cycling you can consider a named loop as a specific route option. Check the route information before setting off.

The municipal office has the Mühlviertler Hochland and Sterngartl region nature experience map, as well as the Sterngartl Gusental region mountain biking map. If you plan to rely on a printed map for your outing, confirm its availability in advance. The names help you choose: a nature experience map on the one hand, and a mountain biking map on the other. This way, you can ask the municipal office specifically for the map that suits your plans.

Cross-country skiers also appreciate Sonnberg. If this activity is important to you, check the current conditions before planning a specific outing. This lets you include cross-country skiing as a separate item in your plans, alongside the rolling hills and the named cycling loop.

Cultural Points of Interest

The Pöllerskapelle chapel is a tourist attraction in Sonnberg and was fully renovated a few years ago. The Sturmmühle memorial stone commemorates Wilfried Atzmüller, who died in a tractor accident on December 19, 1966, at the age of 24. The chapel and the memorial stone represent different cultural connections: for the chapel, its status as a tourist attraction and its renovation are defining features; for the stone, it is a specific person and the reason for the commemoration.

Sonnberg has also had a folk dance and Schuhplattler group for many years. It adds folk dancing and Schuhplattler dancing to the picture of the area. Alongside a tourist attraction and a memorial stone, you will also find a cultural point of interest shaped by a group and its long-standing presence.

Arriving via the Haselgraben

When travelling from Linz toward Bad Leonfelden via the Haselgraben, you can go via Hellmonsödt or Zwettl an der Rodl. Via Hellmonsödt, it is 15 km to Hellmonsödt and then 4 km to Sonnberg. Alternatively, the route goes 19 km to Zwettl an der Rodl and then 2 km to Sonnberg. The legs differ: on the Hellmonsödt route, the section to the intermediate stop is shorter and the next section is longer; via Zwettl, it is the other way around.
