Aurach am Hongar – Hiking, Culture and Adventure Pool
Accommodation in Aurach am Hongar
Aurach am Hongar lies at the foot of the 943 m-high Hongar. If you are planning a stay with mountain trails, regional views and local culture, you will find plenty to explore here. Options include two circular trails, mountain biking on the Hongar, listed buildings, a small local history museum, a memorial site and a solar-heated adventure pool. You can shape your stay around mountain activities, local history or time at the pool.
Hongar, Circular Trails and Cycling
The Hongar Circular Trail leads via the Hongaralm to the summit of the Hongar. At 943 m, the Hongar offers wonderful views across the region and is suitable for mountain biking. The Hosenflicker Circular Trail, by contrast, starts at the Pfarl inn and offers an opportunity for a short break, when you can read the legend of the Hosenflickerweg. The two trails have different focuses: the Hongar Circular Trail follows the route via the Hongaralm to the summit, while the Hosenflicker Circular Trail is distinguished by its starting point at the inn and the break with the legend. When choosing your outing, you can consider whether the summit or the connection to a local story appeals to you more.
The cycling routes are also relevant when planning your trip: Aurach am Hongar is connected to the Attersee-Salzkammergut cycle route network. Together with the Hongar’s suitability for mountain biking, this offers two ways to think about cycling: mountain biking on the slopes, and the municipality’s connection to the wider network. If you are planning to cycle, you can decide whether mountain biking on the Hongar or the cycle route network should be your main focus.
Local History and Heritage Protection
The parish church dedicated to Saint Alexius has a clearly dated history: it was destroyed by fire on 25 July 1888. The new parish church was consecrated by Bishop Franz Maria Doppelbauer on 23 August 1893. Today, the Catholic parish church of St. Alexius is protected as a listed monument by decree. The sequence of its destruction and consecration provides a concrete historical anchor for the town’s history and makes the church an obvious point of interest for visitors interested in architectural history.
The Schimpl Chapel is also protected as a listed monument by decree. As a second protected building, it offers another perspective on Aurach’s architectural heritage. The Auracher Troadkasten houses a small local history museum with farming equipment. Local cultural interest therefore extends beyond the history of the parish church: the museum focuses on objects used in agricultural work.
Commemoration and Annual Events
The Hongar Cross on the Hongar is a district memorial site established by the Farmers’ Union for everyone who has died in accidents in agriculture and forestry. The Hongar mountain service is held every year on the last Sunday in July. If attending the mountain service is important to your travel plans, you can make a note of this annual date.
Adventure Pool
The solar-heated Aurach am Hongar adventure pool adds time for swimming to the mountain and cultural attractions. It features a large water slide and extensive sunbathing lawns. These two features offer different ways to spend your time: enjoy the movement of the slide or relax on the lawns. If you are planning a stay that combines outings and relaxation, the pool provides a different focus from the Hongar and its circular trails.
