Accommodation in Frankenmarkt
Frankenmarkt offers a variety of options for planning a stay: a Baroque nativity scene with its own founding story, Stauff Castle and the market museum, as well as hiking trails, a cycling route, and other leisure destinations. This makes it easy to shape your stay around your interests, with culture and local history alongside experiences in nature and outdoor activities. The following places and trails offer specific themes to help you choose a hotel in Frankenmarkt.
Art and Local History
The Frankenmarkt Baroque nativity scene was donated by the townspeople in the 18th century in gratitude for being spared the plague. Its figures are around 30 cm tall and dressed in the finest French brocade embroidered with gold, in keeping with the style of the nativity scene. The masterful carvings by Mondsee sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler and his successor Anton Koch contribute to its artistic significance.
Stauff Castle stands on the right bank of the Vöckla, close to Frankenmarkt railway station. The three-storey Renaissance building with its hipped roof creates a different architectural impression from the nativity scene’s world of figures. The Frankomarchia Market Museum offers insights into various aspects of local history in two rooms: The market hall uses exhibits to trace stages in Frankenmarkt’s development as a centre for trade and industry. The council chamber, furnished in the Renaissance style, reflects the town’s former administration and judicial system.
Hiking Trails and Countryside
The Panorama Trail offers views of the Northern Limestone Alps. In Frankenmarkt, one section of the Frankenmarkt Panorama Trail overlaps with the Austrian Way of St. James. The route continues via Vöcklamarkt and Frankenmarkt to Oberhofen am Irrsee, following historic paths that were already laid out in Roman times. The Panorama Trail’s views and the longer route of the Way of St. James offer different ways to experience the local hiking trails.
The Zwergerlweg (Little Gnomes Trail) is a popular destination for families with young children. Fairytale characters, mythical creatures, and gnomes line the trail. Another family hike, Waldidylle, passes a biotope and a Kneipp trail. The Kneipp trail is located at Bräubründl, where water flows into three ponds along the Waldidylle route. The route also leads into Frankenmarkt’s municipal forest, which covers around 200 ha. The water from the Heiliges Bründl spring is traditionally believed to have healing properties for eye ailments.
The trail to Hohes Kreuz leads to a wooden cross amid fields and meadows. Along the way, there are views of the Totes Gebirge, Traunstein, Höllengebirge, and Schafberg mountains. The trails differ not only in their scenery, but also in their specific themes, including family hikes, a pilgrimage route, and viewpoints.
