Discover Vöcklamarkt: Churches, Roman History and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Vöcklamarkt
Vöcklamarkt is surrounded by meadows and wooded hills. It is also home to Vöckladom, Kalvarienberg Church, Roman-era connections, the Clockmaker Crafts Museum and trails through the landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Vöcklamarkt, you can plan your stay around the themes you would like to spend time on: sacred architectural history, the museum, Roman history or a circular walk.
Churches, architectural history and views
Vöckladom, the parish church of Vöcklamarkt, is late Gothic and features Baroque elements from the 18th century. Its tower bears evidence of a precisely dated change: it was given a Baroque design and raised to a height of 82 metres in 1720. The Marian altar contains an altarpiece of Saint Isidore, created by Johann Georg Schmidt in 1739. The parish church thus brings architectural history and sacred art into focus with specific dates.
Kalvarienberg Church was built in 1711 with four Stations of the Cross chapels and consecrated on 14 September, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, by Johannes Raimundus, Count of Lamberg, Auxiliary Bishop of Passau. It stands on a hill north of the market town, offering magnificent views in every direction. Here, architectural history and the views can be appreciated together.
Roman history and the museum
The Roman road from Juvavum (Salzburg) to Lauriacum (Lorch near Enns) ran through Vöcklamarkt. Another connection to Roman times is a Roman milestone found on 6 December 1865 near Mösendorf at a place known as Burgstall. Roman coins, as well as numerous horse skulls and other animal bones, were discovered alongside it. The road and the milestone find represent different historical points of reference: a route through Vöcklamarkt and a dated find site near Mösendorf.
The Clockmaker Crafts Museum includes an original, well-preserved general store from the mid-19th century. The museum is open Saturdays from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., from 1 April to 31 October. As seasonal opening hours and exhibitions may change, check the hours and current displays before your visit.
