Mineralni Bani: Thermal Waters, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Mineralni Bani
Thermal Waters and Forest Landscape
Numerous natural hot springs extend for about 500 m along a fault zone through a volcanic massif. The local mineral water is hyperthermal, at around 54 to 59°C. It is used for water treatments and balneotherapy at a public mineral bath and treatment facilities.
The Chifte Bath attraction offers open-air access to flowing mineral water and includes two large metal showers. In the evening, it features a laser light show. Mineral-water swimming options include indoor and outdoor pools, a semi-Olympic outdoor pool, and an Olympic-size outdoor pool. If you are planning a treatment or a visit to the bath and pools, check current availability and access rules in advance.
The spa resort of Mineralni Bani lies at an elevation of about 280 m on the northern slopes of the eastern Rhodopes and is surrounded by forest vegetation. Thermal springs and wooded slopes thus characterize two distinct aspects of the area: the geological thermal zone and the landscape at the edge of the mountains.

Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Major tourist attractions are accessible by paved roads. Other cultural and natural sites can be reached via six eco-trails on foot or in vehicles with high ground clearance. Between Aida Peak and Sarnitsa are Orlovi Skali, the Boraka Reserve, and a protected area for wild peonies and lily of the valley.
Archaeology, Traditions and a Terrarium
Kaleto above Sarnitsa preserves wall remains of a Thracian, Late Antique and medieval fortress, as well as a signal tower. The enclosed area covers about 2 decares. In the center of Mineralni Bani, “Virgin Mary’s Footstep” is just 5 m from the oldest known mineral spring. The site is considered a water-related sanctuary created by the Thracians and used in Roman, medieval and modern times. The rock formation is interpreted as an altar associated with water deities.
Above Angel Voyvoda is the archaeological complex “City of the Sun,” which has the status of cultural heritage of national significance. The Hasara complex includes a fortress wall and more than 50 niches carved into the rock. The Sharapani near Mineralni Bani are wine installations carved into the rock, dating from the first millennium BC.
The three-day September festival “Horo at Grape Harvest” combines a reenactment of an ancient Thracian ritual with Bulgarian folklore and dance groups. It features vineyards around Susam and winemaking at the Sharapani. Regional grape and wine producers present wines for tasting and sale; participation may vary from year to year. If you are planning a trip to the festival, check the specific dates and program.
In Toplika Park, the terrarium is a visitor attraction for children and adults. Its permanent exhibition includes amphibians and reptiles, such as green iguanas, rock pythons, Paraguay anacondas, and rattlesnakes.
