Dolno Cherkovishte: Thracian Sanctuaries and Rock Tombs
Accommodation in Dolno Cherkovishte
Near Dolno Cherkovishte, Thracian sanctuaries and fortress remains are as much in focus as a route through deciduous forest, open terrain and along the Arda River. When planning your trip, you can focus on archaeological structures and historical traces, or on a longer hike with the possibility of birdwatching. If you are looking for a hotel at this destination, distinguishing between these options can help you decide which themes you want your trip to revolve around.
Thracian Sanctuaries and Rock Tombs
Kovan Kaya near Dolno Cherkovishte is an important Thracian megalithic sanctuary complex. It includes more than 100 trapezoidal rock niches and a cave-like tomb carved into the rock. The many niches and the tomb give the complex different archaeological features that draw attention to its design.
About 500 metres northwest of Dolno Cherkovishte are six more cult niches. The archaeological complex also includes a tomb carved into the summit of the rock massif and traces of a large Thracian settlement nearby. The cult niches, the tomb at the summit and the settlement remains represent different aspects of the archaeological heritage around the village.
Popmartin's Hole is considered an ancient Thracian royal tomb. Its entrance lies beneath a row of twelve trapezoidal niches. The rectangular chamber measures 2.75 metres in length, 1.50 metres in width and 1.80 metres in height. Together, the row of niches and the measurements describe the tomb's specific architectural form.
A Thracian settlement dating from the Roman period was also discovered near Dolno Cherkovishte, beside an ancient Roman road. It adds another historical trace to the sanctuaries and tombs: here, the history of Thracian settlement meets the Roman period.
Fortress Remains and Landscape
The Hisarlaka Fortress has a trapezoidal ground plan. Its two-metre-thick walls are made of local rubble stone bonded with white mortar. The fortress remains along the Arda near Dolno Cherkovishte include Kartal Kaya, also called St George, and Sarlaka, also called Hisarlaka. These names refer to two different fortress remains; Hisarlaka is also another name for Sarlaka.
A description dated 1 May 2023 gives the area of the Dolno Cherkovishte protected area as 4,691.116 decares. It states that the area is intended to protect the habitats of protected, rare and endangered plant and animal species. Thus, alongside the historic structures, preserving these habitats is another theme to consider during a stay in the area.
Hiking Route and Birdwatching
The route through the Dolno Cherkovishte area is 24 kilometres long and takes about six hours. It passes through deciduous forest and open terrain, as well as along the Arda River. The length and approximate duration can be considered together when planning your trip: the distance indicates the route's extent, while the time gives an approximate estimate of how long it takes.
There is a birdwatching point along the route. Possible sightings there, which are seasonal and not guaranteed, include Egyptian vulture, black stork, saker falcon, Eleonora's falcon and long-legged buzzard. If you would rather focus your trip on nature observation than on archaeological sites, this offers a different focus from exploring the niches, tombs and fortress remains.
