Stambolovo: Landscape, Birdlife and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Stambolovo
The municipality of Stambolovo stretches from the Haskovo Plain to the Arda River; semi-mountainous massifs alternate with plains. When choosing a destination, it is worth first considering whether nature and birdlife, archaeological sites or wine are your main interests.
Landscape and Birdlife
The Arda has cut through the Rhodope slopes, where volcanic rock formations reach heights of up to 150 metres. Parts of the municipality lie within the Studen Kladenets, Most Arda and Eastern Rhodopes Natura 2000 sites. The landscape thus combines plains and semi-mountainous massifs with striking rock formations along the river.
On the northern shore of the Studen Kladenets Reservoir lies the Golemiat Sipey protected area, covering 653.9 hectares. Rock formations and scree slopes define the area, where endangered bird species nest. Between 9 and 14 pairs of Egyptian vultures breed on the rocks; their number may change over time. Do not visit the rock formations from December through August, as this is the vultures’ breeding season. Also check local access requirements before your trip.
In the wider Stambolovo area, guided birdwatching trips and hikes along two ecological trails are offered. Check in advance whether these activities are currently available. One route in the wider area passes the Thracian megalithic monument of Kromlekh; orchids grow nearby, and several bird species can be found there.
The municipality of Stambolovo promotes ecological and rural tourism, as well as hunting and water sports tourism. It links these activities with mountainous terrain, a mild climate and abundant water.
Archaeology, Religious Sites and Wine
A prehistoric settlement dating from the 5th to 4th millennium BC has been identified on the Beshkova River in the Stambolovo area. A Thracian chariot dating from the 2nd century was discovered at Dvete Chuki in the Stambolovo area. Archaeological investigations in the vicinity of Stambolovo have also uncovered remains of Slavic settlements from the First and Second Bulgarian Empires. The finds thus include different traces: settlements and a chariot discovery.
Kovan Kaya is considered a protected Thracian rock sanctuary with several hundred trapezoidal cult niches. A paved road runs less than 100 metres from Kovan Kaya. If you wish to visit the site, check access in advance; road conditions may change. The village of Stambolovo is also home to the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, a Christian place of worship.
Stambolovo Winery is located in the village of Stambolovo, right next to the municipal building. If you are planning a visit, ask in advance about current visitor options. Merlot from the Stambolovo area is considered an internationally recognised example of Bulgarian Merlot. If you have specific plans for a tour or tasting, you should also check in advance what is currently available.
