The landscape of Straldzha Municipality is shaped by rich flora and fauna, mineral springs and the protected area of “Blatoto.” It also features sacred art, archaeological collections and local folklore. This offers a range of options for planning your trip: nature watching and walks alongside cultural history and seasonal customs.

Nature and trails

The area at Indzhovi Izvori near Voinika is considered suitable for relaxation, walks and picnics. There are platforms for observing birds and wildlife, eco-trails and picnic areas. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit.

A short walk from the Lyulyak hut leads to Marash-Kaleto. An amphora, coins and pottery were discovered there; the finds are displayed at the Historical Museum of Straldzha. Check the condition of the trail before setting out.

Cultural history in Straldzha and Zimnitsa

The Church of St. Archangel Michael in Straldzha is a cultural monument with valuable icons and wood carvings. In 1851, the church received a firman authorising its construction; in 1857, it was richly decorated by the painter Alexander P. Georgiev (Zograf). The church preserves icons of the Archangel Michael, the Mother of God, St. George, the Prophet Elijah and St. Demetrius, as well as a New Testament from 1859, translated by Neofit Rilski. The history of the building and its preserved works give the sacred art here a tangible historical context.

The Historical Museum of Straldzha is housed in a protected granary built in 1893. It displays archaeological materials, photographs and documents about the settlement’s history from antiquity to the present day. These include Bueneshki and Kukeri costumes and a copy of the 1898 appointment order for Yavorov. At the ethnographic museum in the municipal village of Zimnitsa, which opened in 1994, you can see agricultural tools, household items, jewellery and traditional clothing from the village’s past. This glimpse into everyday life complements the archaeological finds and historical documents at the museum in Straldzha. The exhibits on display may change; check current visiting arrangements before visiting a museum.

Folklore and wine traditions

The “Vuzhichki” dance ensemble from Straldzha has a history spanning almost half a century and has received gold medals at national folklore gatherings. The municipality’s Kukeri Festival draws on folklore traditions associated with Bulgarian winter and spring holidays and includes a competition. The Kukeri tradition involves visits to homes, dances and blessings for good health; the groups receive wine, eggs, sausage and money as gifts. The programme and participation may vary from year to year.

Trifon Zarezan also offers a glimpse into the local wine tradition. On February 14, the municipality and the local cultural centre traditionally hold a celebration for winegrowers and winemakers. The competition includes white and red wine, as well as Pelin and rakia.

Exploring a municipal route

A municipal tourist route is designed for travel by car or organised bus. It covers 80 kilometres and can be completed in two days. The starting point is in Zimnitsa, at the ethnographic collection and the Church of St. Demetrius; the destination is a producer’s boutique wine shop in Lozenets. This offers a practical framework for a longer drive combining cultural stops with a wine destination. Check road conditions and accessibility before setting off.
