History and Collections in Harmanli
The Historical Museum of Harmanli presents several periods of history. Its archaeological exhibition covers the Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age, Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The ethnographic exhibition focuses on everyday life and holidays in the region, with 19 display cases. Traditional women’s and men’s clothing and jewellery from the Harmanli area are also on display.
The archaeological exhibits include a model of an old wheel found during excavations at Shihanov Bryag near Harmanli, and a coin hoard from Castra Rubra. It contains gold coins from the reigns of Tiberius Mauricius and Heraclius. The exhibition on modern history covers a different period, from the Liberation to the beginning of democratic changes, and displays weapons, medals, archival material and photographs.
The cultural centre and library also offer reasons to visit. The library has more than 60,000 titles and a children’s section. The exhibition hall hosts author and art exhibitions, touring exhibitions and art bazaars. The institution also provides information about notable places in Harmanli and local writers, artists and other public figures. The programme and services may change; check what is currently on offer before visiting.
Bridges, Fountains and Other Places
The almost completely preserved Humpback Bridge is part of Harmanli’s cultural heritage and is considered one of Bulgaria’s examples of Ottoman architecture. It was built in the 16th century by architect Mimar Sinan. The bridge is for pedestrians; you can drive to within 100 metres of it. As access information may change, it is advisable to check locally before setting out.
Other features of the area include a preserved wall of the caravanserai, the churches of St. Athanasius and St. Ivan Rilski, and the Chapel of St. Triphon. The Belonogata fountain is associated with Petko Slaveykov’s poem and is considered a landmark of Harmanli. The Gergana monument is also connected with the fountain. Some accounts associated with Belonogata are disputed.
Defileto and Routes to Historic Sites
The Defileto protected area features rock formations, rivers flowing through small gorges, waterfalls and wooden bridges. The Defileto eco-trail reaches the Dado-Todorova spring after 2.7 kilometres. The trail passes through especially scenic countryside. Route information and conditions may change; check the latest situation before setting out. There are places to rest and walk along the banks of the Harmanliyska River, though conditions on site may vary.
Castra Rubra is nearby and is connected with the Roman road Via Diagonalis. The site served as a roadside station where the Roman state post changed horses. A paved road leads to within about two kilometres; after that, there is a two-kilometre walk. As access may change with road conditions, check these before driving.
