The municipality of Topolovgrad is located in the Haskovo region of central Bulgaria. Its landscape shifts from hilly terrain in the south to flatter land in the north. In the Sakar Mountains, open, low mountain landscapes, rounded hills and small river valleys shape the surroundings. The region therefore brings together cultural sites, hiking trails and nature-related attractions.

Landscape and Places of Interest

The municipality’s designated recreation and tourism areas include Paleokastro, the route towards Visegrad Peak, Kazankite, the Holy Trinity Monastery, areas around Sakarci and Hlyabovo, and the Lower Tundzha Gorge near Darkaya. These names represent different ways to explore the area: Paleokastro combines history with a climb, while the trails in the Sakar Mountains focus on outdoor activity.

The wider Sakar region’s natural environment is another point of interest. A total of 220 bird species have been recorded there, including 90 listed in Bulgaria’s Red Data Book. The landscape of hills and small river valleys provides a setting for this regional biodiversity. Within the municipality, Black Rocks is protected as a natural monument to preserve its distinctive rock formations.

Cultural Sites and History

Paleokastro combines a Thracian rock sanctuary dedicated to the sun with a fortress and settlement. The site was inhabited from the 5th century BC to the 12th century AD. One route description leads there southwest of Topolovgrad via a climb of about 2.5 kilometres; Paleokastro is located at an altitude of approximately 424 metres.

The Christian rock sites mentioned include the Old Church above the Holy Trinity Monastery, the St Marina Chapel in Sakarci, St Spas north of Topolovgrad, and a rock church near Matochina. These places add religious buildings and sites of worship in the municipality to the area’s historical perspective.

The historical museum in Topolovgrad covers the area’s history from antiquity to the present day; an ethnographic collection is housed on the lower floor. A separate museum collection is located in the community centre in Radovets. Those wishing to include cultural sites and collections in their trip will find different ways to explore the region’s history and everyday life.

Hiking Trails and Getting Around

The climb to Paleokastro is described as taking about 1.5 hours uphill on foot each way. It runs mostly along a forest track and has a moderate elevation gain. Sturdy footwear and water are recommended. There are no opening hours or entrance fee for access to Paleokastro; entry is free. As access arrangements may change, check local conditions before travelling.

The Visegrad eco-trail is a circular route that starts and ends at a car park on the road towards Visegrad. It climbs to the highest point in the Sakar Mountains and leads to the remains of a fortress. The trail runs mostly along forest paths; there are no water fountains along the way. It is intended for physically active hikers. Sturdy footwear, provisions, water and basic hiking equipment are recommended.

Another option is the Hlyabovo–Nachevi Chaïri circular hike. It passes through forest, crosses the Sokolitsa River and goes by a small reservoir on the way back. The two routes therefore differ in the features described: the Visegrad trail focuses on the climb and the fortress remains, while the Hlyabovo route features the river and reservoir.

The Plochet recreation area is also located near Topolovgrad. Its facilities include seating, shelters, a playground, barbecue facilities, and volleyball, basketball and football courts. The site also has paths and a model of a Thracian sanctuary. When planning your stay, you can choose between cultural sites, longer hikes and a recreation area equipped with leisure facilities.

Events and Regional Highlights

Topolovgrad hosts the Velko Kanev International Festival of Amateur Comedy, Pantomime and Satire every year. It is included in Bulgaria’s National Cultural Calendar; dates and programme vary. If an event is important to your trip, check the dates and programme in advance.

At the traditional Holy Trinity folk festival near the monastery, folk groups from Southern Thrace perform. Artists display their work and create art on site along an artists’ avenue. Here too, the timing and programme vary. In the wider Sakar region, around a dozen wineries produce wine, with a focus on red varieties; Merlot is considered an important local grape variety. The number of wineries may change over time.

Whether you focus on cultural sites, hiking trails or regional events, the options described differ in character and requirements. Before searching for a hotel, decide which of these interests will shape your trip.
