Valchedram is shaped by two distinct themes: the protected areas along the Danube and the cultural heritage of the town and other places in the municipality. Let these guide your trip planning and you will find both landscapes with special conservation status and churches, archaeological sites and preserved folklore traditions.

Danube Islands and Protected Areas

The “Ibisha” nature reserve lies in the eastern part of the Danube island of Tsibar, in the area of the village of Dolni Tsibar in Valchedram Municipality. It covers 34.3 hectares. The protected communities of the Danube islands include riparian forests and wetlands; the area also preserves refuges for rare and endangered plant and animal species.

The “Tsibar Island” protected area, covering 101.48 hectares, is distinct from it. It includes the part of Tsibar Island in the area of Dolni Tsibar that does not belong to the “Ibisha” nature reserve, as well as two smaller islands downstream in the area of Gorni Tsibar. The “Tsibar Islands” protected landscape preserves habitats for protected bird species, which use them for breeding and wintering, as well as stopover sites during migration.

The “Zlatiata” Natura 2000 Special Protection Area for birds has code BG0002009 and includes the town of Valchedram and the villages of Bazovets, Gorni Tsibar, Zlatia and Razgrad. Its stated area is 434,987.345 decares. The protected area aims to conserve and maintain the habitats of protected bird species and, where necessary, restore them. For specific plans where boundaries or names matter, check the current registers.

The Zlatiata loess plateau also shapes the municipality’s landscape: its western part extends across the eastern half of Valchedram Municipality. Thus, the protected Danube islands and the loess landscape represent different natural environments within the same municipality.

Cultural Sites and History

The Ancient Fortress of Cebrus in Dolni Tsibar is listed as an archaeological immovable cultural property of national importance. It is part of the serial property “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Danube Limes in Bulgaria,” which is on Bulgaria’s Tentative List for UNESCO. These two recognitions give the site a clear connection to Roman heritage, without implying anything about access for visitors today.

The Church of St. Paraskeva is located in Valchedram. It is a scaled-down model of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and is known for its unique iconostasis. The combination of architecture and interior furnishings provides a distinct cultural focus alongside the municipality’s archaeological sites.

The beginnings of the Valchedram museum collection date back to 1960. In 1992, the municipal administration made the former bathhouse building available for the collection. These milestones tell the story of the collection’s origins and the intended use of the historic building, without making any claim about current visitor access.

Folklore and Local Traditions

The municipality’s distinctive folklore traditions, customs, songs and legends are performed by dance ensembles and amateur folklore groups. One example is the “Kalushari” group from Zlatia. It was formed in its current form in 2010 to revive an authentic ritual that has been practised in the village for centuries. Both an inherited tradition and its conscious revival are therefore at the heart of the group.

The “Songs and Dances from Zlatia” folklore festival lasted two days in its 2014 edition and ended with a concert on 14 October. These specific programme details refer to that edition and do not give a current event date.

Two clear perspectives can shape the focus of a trip: the protected areas and their importance for habitats and bird species, or the cultural heritage, from Cebrus and the Church of St. Paraskeva to folklore and rituals. The themes are distinct, but complement each other in portraying the municipality, without any one focus explaining the others.
