Nikolovo brings together the Nikolovo Reservoir, Lipnik Forest Park and recurring cultural events. When planning your trip, consider several different factors: the waterside landscape and forest character, trail conditions and timetables, and the dates of the festivals. If you are considering Nikolovo for a hotel stay, these nature and cultural highlights can help you choose when to visit.

Reservoir and Lipnik Forest Park

The Nikolovo Reservoir is an artificial body of water on the Saradjiyska River and is about 1,450 metres long. Lipnik Forest Park is in the Nikolovo area, ten kilometres east of Ruse. A forest complex covering around 20,000 decares (about 2,000 hectares), characterised by its lime trees, defines the park landscape. The park’s development began in the 1950s. The reservoir and forest park have distinct landscape features: an artificial body of water on the one hand, and an extensive, lime-rich woodland with its own history as a park on the other.

Plan the eco-trail and your journey

The Lipnik–Minzuhar eco-trail connects Lipnik Forest Park in Nikolovo with the Minzuhar Hut. A municipal notice dated 28 March 2023 states that a section that had previously been impassable had been made accessible. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. For travel to the trail’s endpoints, a municipal access notice from the same date lists bus routes 10 and 33, as well as the Ruse–Nikolovo regional bus route. Timetables may change, so check the connection for your travel date. On the Nikolovo dam section, a temporary traffic regulation published on 26 March 2026 prohibited vehicles with a maximum permissible mass of more than 3.5 tonnes from passing through. Before travelling there, check whether this regulation applies on your travel date.

Folklore events at Lipnik Forest Park

The National Folklore Festival “Stage Under the Lime Trees” is traditionally held at Lipnik Forest Park. It lasts two consecutive days in June; the specific date may vary from one edition to another. The competition features dance, music and authentic folklore groups from northern Bulgaria. Another event is the annual traditional gathering on 2 August, Ilinden, also held at Lipnik Forest Park. The distinction matters when planning your trip: the June festival focuses on two days of festivities and a competition between groups, while the gathering takes place every year on the fixed date of 2 August. The title “Stage Under the Lime Trees” suits the lime-tree-rich forest park.
